VIRginia International Raceway company history timeline

1957

VIR ad in "Road & Track" - May 1957

The track originally opened August 3, 1957, and was created by a group of men using a bulldozer.

Driving a Maserati 450S, Carroll Shelby won the feature race on the track’s inaugural weekend in August 1957.

1959

In spite of some excellent races, Sports Car Enterprises were unable to draw the necessary spectator crowds and they were forced to give up the lease in 1959.

VIR first hosted what was then known as the Trans-American Sedan Championship in the fourth race of its inaugural 1966 season.

1974

Rembold (and facility manager Henry Wallace) until 1974.

2000

The track was reopened in 2000 by New Yorker Harvey Siegel and Connie Nyholm using a "country club" model.

2009

It was seven years until the series’ next visit in 2009.

Klaus Graf won the 2009 race in a Jaguar XKR fielded by Greg Pickett, while R.J. Lopez won the following year in a Corvette.

2011

The 2011 weekend saw Tony Ave earn his second VIR pole en route to capturing the TA victory in a Corvette, while Bob Stretch won theTA2® class in a Camaro.

2012

The American Le Mans Series used the Full Course configuration for its inaugural event at VIR in September 2012 where a new track record was set by Klaus Graf driving the Muscle Milk LMP1 car.

2013

In early 2013, Siegel retired from ownership, and Nyholm became one of the only female majority owners of a racetrack in the country.

When Trans Am returned in 2013, Simon Gregg won from the pole in Jim Derhaag’s Corvette – opening seven years of great racing.

2014

Since 2014, VIR has hosted a GT only race in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
