Virginia Opera company history timeline

1974

By October 2011 the Guild was reorganized and had absorbed a small opera company, Zarsuela Di Ci and its Artistic Director, Jose Sacin, and performed the Children's "Opera Monkey See, Monkey Do" to over 3,000 school children in Arlington VA. It was formed as an independent organization, yet supporting of the Opera Theater of Northern Virginia (OTNV). OTNV began offering an annual theater performance of an age-appropriate opera for young school students in 1974.

Organized in 1974 by founding chair Edythe C. Harrison, Virginia Opera was launched with two productions in the Norfolk Center Theater.

1977

Virginia Opera’s statewide expansion began by producing in Richmond in 1977 with the encouragement of Governor Mills Godwin and Mrs.

1983

By 1983, the Richmond and Central Virginia Board of Virginia Opera was formed and a Richmond office was opened.

1991

The Opera Guild of Northern Virginia (OGNV) incorporated in 1991 in the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a volunteer-based non-profit charitable organization with IRS 501 (c) 3 status.

1992

In November 1992, the Company presented its first mainstage performance at the Center for the Arts at George Mason University in Fairfax.

By 1992 the Guild immersed itself in all aspects for supporting this unique community offering to school children’s education.

2011

2012

Peter Mark was named Artistic Director Emeritus in 2012.

2015

Additionally, The Kurt Weill Foundation named Maestro Turner the inaugural recipient of the Julius Rudel/Kurt Weill Conducting Fellowship in 2015.

2017

Her final performances were in the title role of Medea in Toronto and Versailles (2017).

2018

Adam Turner was appointed Artistic Director in 2018.

2019

Turner returned to Central City Opera to conduct Madama Butterfly for the 2019 summer season.

2020

Peggy Kriha Dye, appointed President and CEO in 2020, currently leads the company.
