Visiting Nurse Service of New York company history timeline

1893

In 1893 on the Lower East Side of New York City, Lillian Wald, a New York Hospital nursing graduate, was teaching a course to immigrant women on home care and hygiene.

1895

By 1895, the settlement had moved to a larger facility on Henry Street.

1931

1940

Upon her death at age 73 in 1940, thousands filled Carnegie Hall to celebrate Wald’s remarkable legacy and to hear messages from leaders including President Roosevelt commending Lillian Wald’s vision, compassion, and leadership.

1944

In 1944, the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) was established as an agency separate from the original Henry Street Settlement.

1973

1983

The year 1983 was a big one for VNS Health, with the creation of two major programs: Hospice Care and Personal Care.

1998

VNS Health expanded offerings for children and families and in 1998 began offering health plans to help people stay in their homes and communities safely and independently.
