Dr. Elise Eden: Find a mentor/role model who is in the place you want to be in 5 years. Getting started can be hard, but having a resource outside of your new job is invaluable.
Dr. Elise Eden: Check the cost of living when considering a new job. If you're relocating, make sure the salary is commensurate to the cost of living in that area. Don't be afraid to negotiate and know your worth. Remember, while you will get raises- a percentage of a larger salary will be a bigger raise too!
Dr. Elise Eden: The way we talk about the voice in regard to gender identity is already changing but has a long way to go. Teachers of voice and choir must be able to separate Fach from gender. Knowing how to work with a transitioning voice will become a lot more important. Understanding the role of hormones in the singing voice must be studied and understood.
Colin Briskey: Know your worth and stand by it. A lot of people will tell you to say yes to everything and do things for free. In the music industry there are definitely early career stages where saying yes to nearly everything and doing some work for free is necessary. However, if you're always so busy working for free, you'll never have time to level up and get paid for your work. Do the work at the highest quality you can and stand by your worth.
Colin Briskey: I think the answer to this question is complicated and really depends on what type of career you're looking to have in the industry. I work mainly with vocalists. I think vocalists, especially those in popular music genres, need to know more than just the basics of amplification technology. But, especially, they need to know how to utilize the microphone as an expressive part of your instrument rather than just a tool to be heard.
Colin Briskey: Salaries can be really hard to come by in the music industry. Since I work with mostly performers, almost none of my clients have a salary. I usually tell my early career performers that having some sort of parallel side hustle can be really helpful. For many of my musical theatre clients this means something like getting skilled with a camera and offering headshot services, utilizing their makeup skills to be a makeup artist as well, or offering social media related services like Instagram design or social media management.
