In 1993, Software IP Encryption Protocol (SWIPE), the earliest form of VPN, was introduced and it was based on the research of John Ioannidis.
As the need for network and internet security became more than obvious, John Ioannidis and his team started researching internet security technology at Columbia University and AT&T Bell Labs in 1993.
