Then in 1969 the theatre was renovated again to become a Performing Arts Center.
On September 23, 1976, it was the site of the first presidential debate between Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter.
So have presidents—Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford held their first debate at the Walnut during the 1976 presidential election campaign.
With the arrival of Bernard Havard in 1982, and the decision to become a producing house again, the Walnut found its purpose.
The Walnut Street Theatre Company, a non-profit regional producing company, was formed in 1983 by Bernard Havard.
In Fall 2008, the theater celebrated its 200th season of live entertainment.
