The Department of Public Works is seeking a Truck String - Highway Supervisor to lead critical highway maintenance and infrastructure operations that directly impact public safety and mobility.
In this role, you'll coordinate and oversee a wide range of highway and roadway operations-from road maintenance, asphalt paving, drainage, and dust abatement to snow removal, storm response, and emergency services. Working through Lead Equipment Operators, you'll ensure crews, equipment, and materials are deployed efficiently while upholding high standards for quality, safety, and performance.
You'll serve as both a supervisor and mentor-guiding, training, and motivating maintenance staff, conducting performance evaluations, and supporting hiring and disciplinary processes. Your leadership will help crews perform at their best while ensuring compliance with safety standards, operational procedures, and industry best practices.
Beyond daily operations, you'll play a key role in planning and analysis-developing schedules, reviewing data, inspecting work, and recommending improvements to policies, procedures, and priorities. You'll collaborate with County departments, municipalities, contractors, and the public to coordinate the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, drainage systems, and rights-of-way.
This position requires a consistent in-person presence and includes after-hours, on-call responsibilities for snow removal, emergency response, and natural disaster recovery. Hiring Range: $78,000.00 - $88,000.00 annually
This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday - Thursday, 6:30am - 5:00pm;

This position is responsible for performing a variety of analytical, planning, and coordinating duties in support of the internal and external activities of the Highway Division of the Department of Public Works (DPW). Assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of maintenance workers engaged in a variety of activities related to the maintenance and/or repair of streets, roads, ditches, guardrails, drainage systems, trees, sidewalks, curb and gutter, and other related operations. Inspects work in progress and at completion to determine adherence to standards. Supervises and coordinates activities related to the maintenance of tools and equipment. Investigates complaints from the public and takes appropriate corrective action. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.
* Coordinates the operational activities for the Division through Lead Equipment Operators, including road maintenance, asphalt paving, drainage, dust abatement, weed control, new construction of roads, earthwork, graveling of roads, stockpiling of materials, crack sealing, street cleaning, signing and striping, facilities maintenance, snow and storm services, and emergency responses. Operates soil stabilization equipment as needed.
* Provides supervision, mentorship, guidance, and training to assigned staff. Conducts performance evaluations and motivates employees to reach peak productivity and performance; participates in the hiring and disciplinary process.
* Provides project schedules, reports, and data analysis to assist in the management of the Division and ensures efficient deployment of resources.
* Assists in monitoring, evaluating, and responding to procedures and service delivery methods.
* Implements procedures and standards for the maintenance and completion of assigned operations. Reviews progress and recommends changes in priorities and schedules.
* Assists in the development and implementation of strategic planning, goals, goal measurement, objectives, and priorities of assigned programs.
* Recommends and implements improved policies and procedures.
* Coordinates services and activities with other County departments, divisions, municipalities, jurisdictions, outside agencies, organizations, and the public relative to the construction, maintenance, and repair of highways, drainage facilities, bridges, and right of ways.
* Assists in the inspection of roads, drainage structures, and bridges to facilitate pavement management, drainage facilities, and signing/striping inventory systems for determination of long and short-term maintenance and construction project priorities.
* Provides input for preparation and coordination of contracts, specifications, bid proposals, and purchase of construction equipment, materials, supplies, and inventory activities.
* Assigns after-hours on-call duties; directs snow removal and emergency crews.
* Scheduled for on-call after hours to respond to emergencies, including snow removal, flood repair, tornado clean-up, or other natural disaster or safety needs for the motoring public.
* Performs other duties as required.
Supervision Exercised: This classification requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or unit(s) including providing input on hiring/disciplinary action and work objectives/ effectiveness, performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed. A first-line or second-line supervisor typically performs these tasks.
Supervision Received: Receives administrative supervision. This classification typically performs job duties and resolves conflict according to their own judgment and initiatives, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Required Education & Experience
* High school diploma or equivalent education.
* Five years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance, repair, construction, or related experience, including experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
* Blades assignment requires three years of motor grader experience.
* Two years of supervisory or leadership experience in a public works environment, including providing guidance and direction to others.
Preferred Education & Experience
* Associate's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related field.
Licenses/Certificates
* Must possess and maintain a Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License. Tanker Endorsement must be obtained prior to employment.
Pre-Employment Requirements
* Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.
Duties are performed in an office environment but may also require travel to County facilities, conferences, seminars, meetings, and outlying areas for inspection of projects. May work in adverse weather conditions, possible exposure to persons in stressful situations, hazardous materials, and hazardous situations, including close proximity to moving vehicles and traffic. Occasional reaching, bending, climbing, crouching, and kneeling may be required. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Loads, unloads, stacks, and stores ammunition, including rockets, small arms, artillery projectiles, powder canisters, fuses, rockets, missiles, smoke, illumination and white phosphorous pyrotechnics, mines and other items at the ASP.
Reviews unit paperwork for accuracy and for compliance with existing regulations.
Assist units with loading and unloading ammunition residue and securing out-bound residue retrograde shipments; may do so by use of a forklift, dolly, or other item of equipment.
Assists with the receipt of commercial vehicles/railcars that are transporting ammunition to Fort Carson DRMO/DLA-DS/ASP and other areas on post as required.
Assists with inventories, and with the thorough screening of turn-in items, to include open containers of ammunition and amnesty turn-ins that are transported to the AHA.
May assists with the preparation of outbound shipments of live or unserviceable ammunition and explosives.
May assist government QASAS personnel in the packing, unpacking, inspection, renovation, re-warehousing process to include remarking/re-stenciling ammunition and containers.
Performs customer service and support functions for a wide range of customers and units.
Must have a familiarity with procedures relating to both automated and non-automated customer units.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Forklifts, banding equipment, spray paint and material handling equipment.
Physical Demands & Working Environment:
Work is generally conducted in a warehouse/outside environment. Duties may involve the conduct of work in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions. Work may require lifting up to 50 lbs.; stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting; and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical or biological agents. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices.
