One of the oldest colleges in the United States, Washington and Lee University (W&L) traces its history back to 1749, when it was first established as the Augusta Academy. Since then, it has established a tremendous reputation for excellence based on honor, tradition and strong academics. W&L is primarily an undergraduate college. More than 40 majors are available between the main undergraduate college and the Ernest Williams II School of Commerce, Economics and Politics. The university has a student-to-faculty ratio under 10:1, and faculty members teach every class. The university offers graduate studies through its School of Law, which maintains an enrollment of about 400. School of Law students can pursue a master of law or juris doctor degree. Financial aid is available in the form of state and federal grants, loans and work-study. W&L funds several institutional scholarships, as well, including the prestigious Johnson Scholarship Program, to assist with tuition. Student life at W&L is governed by the Honor System, which respects every student's word in the classroom and campus. The Honor System helps to bring the W&L student body together, creating a safe, trusting and close-knit community.
