Scheduled Hours 40 This position assists with the technical aspects of studies and experiments, including documentation and preparation of materials. More specifically, The Stallings Laboratory is seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual to assist with innovative research in the areas of microbiology and immunology that are driven towards the development of novel treatments for mycobacterial infections.
The Research Technician II will be responsible for the studies involved in evaluating new compounds for antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) in bacterial cultures, in cell culture, and in mouse models of infection. In addition, the Research Technician II will be responsible for the studies involved in evaluating new candidate host-directed therapies for immunomodulatory activity that result in better control of M. tuberculosis infection in cell culture and in mouse models. The position requires working in a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory and working with mice, including harvesting tissue.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
* Assists with research studies, experiments and assays, including collection of data, preparation of solutions and setup and maintenance of equipment.
* Performs bacterial culturing experiments in a Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory.
* Performs data entry and maintains data files on research.
* Prepares tissue cultures, reagents, probe tests, etc.
* Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
* Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
* Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
* This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
* The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Position Summary
The Department of Anesthesiology at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is seeking an accomplished and motivated individual for a full-time research faculty position. POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under limited supervision, coordinate research work in medical and related technical areas. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Coordinate laboratory/ research activities. Plan and carry out projects in accordance with general plans. Perform statistical analysis on public/lab datasets for sc RNA-seq and proteomics results, as well as genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis to identify genetic variants in neurodegenerative diseases. (30%)
* Work closely with the principal investigator. Assist the principal investigator for funding application. (10%)
* Carry out complex research assignments of a non-routine nature. Perform research work in mouse models of neurodegenerative disease by breeding mice, tattooing or ear tagging mice, genotyping mouse tails by PCR and Real-time PCR, maintaining mouse databases, surgery (pre-, intra-, and post-operative procedures), and behavioral testing. * Devise new protocols and techniques for research projects involving a high degree of skill and training. Learn new techniques such as RNA in situ hybridization and further develop existing techniques used in the laboratory. (10%)
* Evaluate adequacy of techniques; study and test new procedures and analyze data. The researchassistant will work closely with other lab members and focus on research involving molecular biology of cardiac muscle contraction and perform a wide array of cellular and molecular biology experiments using gel electrophoresis, protein biochemistry, western blots, bacterial transformation and culture, high throughput small molecule screening, and other in vitro techniques. The researchassistant will use various molecular approaches to bridge the gap of understanding between structure and function in cardiac muscle physiology. This position will work with animals.
Essential Functions
* Work closely with the principal investigator to coordinate research activities that characterize the roles of myofilament contractile proteins in the regulation of cardiac muscle contraction. Work on muscle mechanics setup with molecular reagents and/or cardiac tissues, and work with animal models/and bacterial cells in the laboratory. (50%)
* Carry out general molecular biology, including design and implement cloning strategies, PCR, mutagenesis, gel electrophoresis, gel purification, plasmid preparation, bacterial transformation, protein biochemistry, bacterial culture, western blotting, and expression and purification of recombinant proteins, and small molecule screening using myosin ATPase assays. (20%)
* Devise new protocols and techniques for protein purification and protein binding studies that involve a high degree of skill and training. Carry out complex experiments to characterize binding properties of recombinant and native contractile proteins with various ligands using a variety of molecular and biochemical methods, including but limited to co-sedimentation assays, isothermal calorimetry, microscale thermophoresis, etc. (10%)
* Evaluate adequacy of biochemical techniques, study and test new procedures, collect and analyze data, maintain lab records, provide feedback on experimental design, prepare and present research results in lab meetings. (10%)
* Assist in manuscript preparation and editing. May co-author research projects. (6%)

Full time 8 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday; occasional weekend work in the laboratory may be required
Work is primarily done indoors in a BSL-2 laboratory
Operate and drive state vehicles
Occasional travel required
Occasionally lifting to 50 pounds, standing, climbing, kneeling
Exposure to different foodborne microorganisms and laboratory chemicals
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BS degree in Biological Sciences, Food Science, Food Safety or related technical field
Valid driver's license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MS degree in Biological Sciences, Food Science, Food Safety or related technical field
Experience in the use of food safety/food engineering equipment
Experience gained during graduate training will be credited at ½ time

JOB SUMMARY
This position is a temporary, short-term position. The temporary ResearchAssistant (RA) will assist scientists and graduate students in a study investigating the effectiveness of nonthermal processing methods in reducing foodborne pathogens on leafy greens. The RA will provide support for research by conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, report writing, and perform operational duties associated with leafy greens food safety research.
