Wastewater DAF & Centrifuge Operator

Position Title: Wastewater DAF & Centrifuge Operator
Reports to: Rendering Superintendent
Duration/Usual Hours Per Week: Full-Time, 40 to 48 Hours Per Week.
Shift/Work Days: 1st Shift, 5-6 days per week

Duties and Responsibilities of the Job:
Wastewater DAF & Centrifuge Operator is primarily a day shift position but will have some time on 2nd shift to finish up the process, clean and CIP the centrifuge. Availability to work other shifts to cover vacations and absences is required. The operator will be required to load the grease onto tanker trailers.
Desired abilities include, but are not limited to: Operation of horizontal / vertical centrifuges; Operation of screening equipment; Operation of Wastewater Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system and skimmers; Loading of grease onto a tanker trailer; Adjustment of process chemicals as required; Adjustment of steam valves; basic preventative maintenance; forklift operation; understanding and operating touch screen controls and performing clean-in-place (CIP) procedures. The position interacts and must communicate effectively with other plant operations & maintenance personnel.
The position will also require participation and responsibility in all company safety, food safety and environmental management programs.
Required Skills:

Experience / Qualifications:
Prior wastewater experience preferred but not required.
Ability to multi-task.
Ability to understand and operate touch screen-controlled equipment.

Ability to lift 50 lbs.

**General Summary**

This position controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water. Coordinates all maintenance and repair work and outages in a manner that minimizes the disruption of potable water services.

**Essential Duties**

+ Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant.

+ Dumps specified amounts of chemicals such as chlorine, ammonia, and lime into water, or adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.

+ Mixes chemicals and allows impurities to settle to bottom of tank, turns valves to regulate water through filter beds to remove impurities, pumps purified water into water mains, monitors panel board and adjusts controls to regulator flow rates, loss of head pressure and water elevation and distribution of water.

+ Cleans tanks and filter beds, using backwashing, repairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand- and power tools, tests water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities.

+ May operate portable water-purification plant to supply drinking water, and purify wastewater from plant preparatory to pumping water into rivers and streams or city mains.

+ Performs other duties as assigned.

**Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements**

+ Must have a minimum of two years experience in a similar role.

+ Experience in similar plants and systems.

+ Must possess or received through reciprocity a current/valid operator's certificate equivalent to the highest water certification grade/class level issued by the Water Works Operators Certification Board of Examiners or from reciprocity from applicable state.

+ Must have a valid, current driver's license.

**Work Environment**

+ Regular exposure to extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles, loud noises, chemicals, etc.

+ Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, reaching, and use of hands; regularly lifting and/or moving up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs.

+ Requires use of hand and power tools applicable to trade.

+ Ability to maneuver a job site, including small spaces in around equipment

Reports To : Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager

Summary: Responsible to maintain and operate wastewater treatment facilities and equipment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct sampling and testing of wastewater
• Perform routine system equipment and performance to ensure that pumps, conveyors, blowers, centrifuge, other waste water treatment equipment are functioning properly
• Document and record operational data
• Check and adjust controls and equipment as necessary as well as assist with repairs
• Perform routine laboratory analysis and interpret data through application of mathematical calculations
• Oversee delivery and off-loading of chemicals as well as overseeing chemical inventory
• Assist with maintaining equipment in a clean and operable condition
• Assist with the development of standard operating procedures
• Other duties as assigned.
• Achieve 1A Wastewater Operator’s license from NYWEA within 2 years, and continue with subsequent licenses up to 2A. Levels 3A and 4A are optional.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma/GED required; AAS degree in sciences preferred; Wastewater Operator certification preferred

Qualifications:

• Ability to work a rotating shift schedule
• Valid driver’s license and required insurance
• Some knowledge of plant and functionality
• Experience in wastewater treatment systems and operations preferred
• Knowledge of wastewater regulatory programs
• Knowledge of regulatory reporting requirements and systems

Work EnvironmentWork may be performed under extreme weather conditions including hot and cold ambient temperatures. Incumbent will be required to travel between various buildings and work in plant environment where there are moderate noise levels. Employee would be expected to wear appropriate personal protective equipment for each location and/or task.Physical DemandsWhile performing duties of job, incumbent is occasionally required to bend, lift, walk, or carry equipment. Employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.
