What you'd be responsible for

Participates in the operation, maintenance, control and repair of all related plant process equipment, including pumps, blowers, scrubbers, motors, chlorinators, chemical feeds, sludge equipment and basic laboratory instruments to ensure treated water and effluent meets County, State and EPA quality standards. Obtains samples and performs required tests including PH, CL2, and similar tests. Monitors water demands and adjusts flows through well and/or booster pumps to control distribution system pressures in accordance with established policies. Conducts various tests to determine proper chemical feed rates, calculates chemical feed rates and changes pump settings as needed. Maintains chemical inventory supply and makes requests for new or replacement orders. Operates, monitors and adjusts as necessary all related plant process equipment, including chemical pumps. Monitors and operates telemetry and SCADA systems. Makes equipment adjustments, lubrications, and minor repairs and reports equipment problems. Performs housekeeping duties in order to keep facilities clean and neat. Reads and interprets meters, gauges and instruments and enters the readings; makes calculations and completes written reports. Assists in the training of systems assistants. Maintains daily time card by recording hours spent to complete each task. Coordinates vendors and contractors, ensures proper construction and performs inspections of work. Interfaces with public and participating companies. Performs other work as required.

What's required to be successful

Must possess knowledge of the operations, methods, practices, techniques and servicing requirements of water production, storage and distribution facilities, water treatment and collection facilities. Knowledge of safety practices in the operation of electrical and mechanical equipment used in water facilities. Ability to perform standardized water quality tests; familiarity with drinking water rules and regulations. This position requires the use of Company owned vehicles and equipment. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles in a safe manner, and possess/maintain a valid Arizona driver's license with good driving record.

All candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent. This position is subject to call back, overtime and weekend/holiday emergency call-outs and on-call duty.

Ability to perform accurate mathematical computations. Ability to keep neat and accurate records and make computer entries. Ability to read and interpret meters, charts, gauges and recording devices. Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and regulations. Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job; may be required to perform any job duty in plant operations. Ability to continually lift, bend, climb stairs and work with mechanical hand tools. Ability to perform heavy maneuvers. Must be able to work in varying climatic conditions, including extreme summer heat.

Plant Operator I candidates must have one (1) years' experience in the operation of a surface water treatment plant and ADEQ Grade 1 Water Treatment certification. An ADEQ Grade 1 Water Distribution certification would be a plus, but not required.

Plant Operator II candidates must have two (2) years' experience in the operation of a surface water treatment plant and ADEQ Grade 2 Water Treatment certification. An ADEQ Grade 2 Water Distribution certification would be a plus, but not required.

Plant Operator III candidates must have three (3) years' experience in the operation of a surface water treatment plant and ADEQ Grade 3 Water Treatment certification. An ADEQ Grade 3 Water Distribution certification would be a plus, but not required.

City of Box Elder SD water operator job description

Salary: $18.74 per hour

This is a full-time position located in the Box Elder; the normal schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am -5:00pm; working some evenings and weekends as needed. This position reports directly to the Public Works Water/Waste Water Superintendent.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Assist in the installation and repair of water system components; as well as the installation, maintenance, repair, and reading of water metering components.
  • Assists in the collection of water samples; as well as performing visual checks of facilities for equipment malfunctions and assists in repairing/correcting malfunctions.
  • Maintain records and logs. Collects and records additional performance information.
  • Assists in locating underground utilities.

This position will also include the following duties: building maintenance, assisting with traffic safety devices and controlling traffic at work sites, responding to after hours emergencies, assisting will special city events, and may assist with snow removal operations.


ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Abilities : Learn the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in water utility maintenance. Learn city and departmental safety policies and procedures; as well as the geographic layout of the city, including street names and locations. Ability to learn the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and equipment and the maintenance and cleaning of those vehicles/equipment. Use and safe handling of hand and power tools.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must obtain a South Dakota Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) within 18 months of hire.

This is a key position to the North Carolina projects. This position is for a relief operator that can fill in at both water and wastewater projects. The candidate will travel to the location of the NC project. The candidate will require a NC Grade III Biological Wastewater Certification and a B-Surface NC Water Operator Certification.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities

Operation of water and wastewater treatment plants which ensures compliance with state and federal regulations through routine monitoring and adjustment of plant processes manually and/or through computerized control systems.

Conducts routine testing of water and records test results and maintains the plant log book with accurate and timely entries of activities.

Evaluate all data and information pertaining to the proper operation of the facility and notify Project Manager of any abnormal conditions.

Maintaining the facility treatment units.

Identify and report to the Project Manager the need for repairs to treatment plant equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, blowers, and chemical feed equipment.

Monitors all charts, gauges and other operating equipment and maintains calibration of plant instrumentation and on-line analyzers according to the frequency specified by permitting agencies and/or the manufacturer.

Calculates chemical feed rates, calibrates chemical equipment and adjusts chemical feed rates as indicated by lab tests or by direction of Project Manager to comply with water quality requirements as established for the plant. Adjusts or alters chemical treatment of plant processes as required.

Chemical ordering, receiving and handling.

Responsible for maintaining property in good order to include housekeeping and grounds-up keep.

Promotes the company's business by conducting work assignments in a professional and safe manner.

Communicates the status of the assigned job to division management and customer representative.

Operates all company equipment when authorized and qualified to do so in accordance with company rules, plant rules and work orders.

Responsible for safety under his/her authority. Reports all accidents, near misses and/or injuries involving self, company vehicles or persons under supervision. Promotes safety through own pro-actions and work activities.
