Job Summary:
Learn and perform the following under the guidance of the Chemist and Water Quality Technician I or II: Routine tests (chemical, physical and microbiological), sampling, on-call duties (including weekend work), handle water quality complaints and investigations, preparation of laboratory reagents, compilation of laboratory report forms, computer data entry, chain of custody documents and knowledge of cross connections. Work Performed:
- Learn routine tests and quality control associated with such tests in the area of water quality.
- Learn proper sampling procedures for all types of samples required.
- Learn the different water quality parameters for the different types of water treated and supplied by Middlesex Water Company.
- Learn how to handle water quality complaints in a pleasant way including but not limited to field investigations, if necessary, to try to determine the cause of the complaint and to recommend corrective action.
- Learn and perform on-call duties including weekend work, proper communication and other requirements as specified.
- Learn and practice the maintenance of laboratory equipment and procedures.
- Learn and practice laboratory and field safety procedures and practices as provided.
- Learn to prepare laboratory reagents as needed.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and report to supervisor when replenishment is required.

Qualifications:

Position Summary

Your day to day
Essential Functions (including but not limited to)
* Run water quality analysis on a variety of habitats, systems, and moats including but not limited to Chlorine, Ammonia, Fecal Coliforms
* Maintain and complete preventative maintenance on water quality equipment
* Maintain adequate inventory of water quality supplies
* Repair, replace, troubleshoot pumps, pools, and life support systems
* Assist with construction and maintenance projects
* Quality control for accuracy
* Engage with the Zoo guests at exhibits, conservation stations, keeper talks, training demonstrations, and/or shows
* Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals and systems
* Strong knowledge of zoo layout and general animal collection to respond quickly during animal emergencies and also assist guests on a daily basis with exhibit location
* Initiates and completes area projects with supervisor's approval
* Adherence to area's standard operating procedures (SOP)
* Knowledge of safety SOP, safety concerns, and reporting protocols
* Knowledge of husbandry requirements, and the prevention of zoonotic diseases
* Assist registrar in area's record keeping
* Inspect, clean, and maintain both exhibit and off-exhibit areas

* AALSO water quality level 1 certification preferred but not required

Position Summary Information
General Summary
This position is responsible for water quality sampling from the drinking water distribution system and water filtration plants, wastewater plants, rivers, and reservoirs. In addition, the responsibilities include responding to customer inquiries about water quality and activities related to maintaining contamination response preparedness.
Essential Functions
* Collects samples in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, Industrial Discharge Control, and all other applicable local, state, or federal regulations
* Performs daily activities related to customer complaints handling and coordination of customer sampling logistics. Communicates directly with customers to coordinate investigations and sampling
* Conducts non-compliance, operational sampling at water filtration plants and distribution system sites
* Maintains online water quality monitoring instruments, performs routine site inspections, sensor calibration, and minor repairs
* May serve as a standing member of Contamination Rapid Response Team ( CRRT )
* Performs activities related with uninterrupted CRRT preparedness. Responsibilities include maintaining CRRT inventory, uninterrupted equipment functions, routine equipment checks and calibrations
* Participate in CRRT trainings and exercises
* Prepares reagents and standards for both routine and non-routine analyses and maintains accurate, relevant, and timely records
* Prepares sample bottles for field work, including cleaning, adding chemical preservatives, labeling, and organizing sample transport in accordance with method requirements
Other Functions
* Maintains compliance with all QA/QC and safety requirements at pre-scheduled intervals

Additional Requirements
* Possession of a valid driver's license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date
* Must pass Department of Transportation physical and possess a DOT Medical Card
* Obtain MDE Water Sampler Certification within 3 months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment
* Obtain MDE certification for required field analysis within 6 months and maintain for the duration of employment
* Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Employee may be required to participate in stand-by call-back program
