The Conservation Management Institute (CMI) at Virginia Tech is seeking a field biologist to assist with research projects across various taxa and locations, with a focus on freshwater aquatic fauna. This person will be responsible for working collaboratively with project managers to design and execute various fieldwork and research tasks including aquatic fauna surveys and instream habitat assessments, statistical analysis of biological data, writing technical reports, and developing and managing large-scale databases across multi-taxa and sampling-collection specific datasets. The successful applicant will have skills conducting freshwater mussel and fish surveys, preferably with experience sampling and identifying mussels in the Upper Tennessee, Atlantic Slope, and New River drainages. This person must be able to travel frequently for fieldwork, swim, and be able to work under a range of field conditions including water, remote sampling locations, adverse weather, and rugged terrain.

What You'll Do
As the Patient ResourceSpecialist within our Care Management Team at Author Health, you will focus on supporting patients with serious mental illness and substance use disorders. This includes helping to remove barriers to care by connecting patients with vital resources, including transportation, food, housing assistance, Medicaid applications, and more. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will collaborate with patients, caregivers, and staff to ensure improved access to care and overall health outcomes for seniors and their families. This role is remote and we will provide all the equipment you need.
Patient Advocacy: Act as a liaison between patients and community resources, ensuring timely access to housing assistance, Medicaid enrollment, transportation services, food resources, and copay assistance.
Care Management Support: Work with care managers and healthcare providers to address patients' social, financial, and transportation needs.
Resource Coordination: Assist patients with the process of applying for Medicaid and other public assistance programs. Identify and connect patients with relevant social services, including housing support and food programs.
Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of patient interactions, including resource referrals, case updates, and outcomes, in compliance with HIPAA and company policies.
Education and Empowerment: Educate patients about available resources and guide them through application processes for public assistance programs and community-based services.
Follow-up Support: Monitor patients' progress in securing needed resources, providing follow-up to ensure successful implementation of services.

This position supports the OHSU systems and operations of ambulatory practices, professional services and hospital departments. This position works closely with internal and external customers including Intake Coordinators, Clinical Staff, Surgery Schedulers, Care Managers, Financial Counselors, Insurance Companies, PCP Office Staff, and CMC Leadership to ensure patients receive optimal financial services related to their care.
The Managed Care Coordinator and Insurance Verification & Patient Estimates Specialist are an integral part of the CMC team by providing clear and accurate information regarding our patients' financial obligations related to their visits, treatments, procedures and/or hospital admissions. This role is responsible for obtaining and/or verifying prior authorizations, verifying benefits, creating cost estimates, contacting patients to provide estimates, offer pre-service payment opportunity and collecting pre-service payments for visits, treatments, procedures and/or hospital admissions. This position is also responsible for providing guidance for other staff in the areas of patient liabilities, health care contract terms, complex patient referrals, and other managed care issues.
The incumbent will have an extensive knowledge of Managed Care and Insurance Verification processes in the ambulatory and inpatient setting including but not limited to insurance eligibility, benefits verification and
authorization requirements. This role is knowledgeable about the Epic system and current best practice referral and prior authorization workflows. The incumbent is able to provide support and backup to the Centralized Managed Care & Price Estimates Department as needed for cross-coverage for all managed care and insurance verification workflows.
Function/Duties of Position
Centralized Managed Care and Insurance Verification
Review incoming referral orders to assess patient's needs based on diagnosis, insurance coverage or lack thereof, and previous treatments. Referrals may be received internally via Epic or externally via fax or other methods.
Verify patient information including demographics, insurance coverage and financial status. Confirm patient eligibility for health care coverage and clarify any managed care arrangements. Document any details related to liability insurance (i.e. motor vehicle accident, personal injury, or worker's compensation) to determine third party liability.
Obtains benefit information including current eligibility, deductible or co-pays, co-insurance, stoploss or out of pocket status, authorization requirements, PCP referral requirements, days approved (for routine admissions), and correct billing address.
Document information based on department protocols in the Epic Referral shell.
Work closely with referring providers to obtain necessary insurance referrals and authorizations.
For urgent/emergent admissions, provides admit information and sets up authorizations and/or PCP referrals. Contacts care- management to provide clinical review and obtain length of stay.
For routine admissions, confirms that the authorizations and/or PCP referrals cover the designated admission. If authorizations and/or PCP referrals are not noted in the system, contacts the Managed Care Coordinator from specialist's office requesting the admission for follow up with the designated insurance company.
Send notification of admission for urgent admissions.
When appropriate, obtain authorizations for all clinical care, procedures, diagnostic studies, medications, outpatient infusion treatment, and inpatient admissions including notifying insurance upon admission.
Follow up on all pending authorizations and/or PCP referrals until accounts are secured.
Maintains current information on managed care insurance plans and serves as a liaison and information resource for patients, referring physician offices, and other OHSU staff. Applies problem solving and negotiating skills in resolving patient concerns and managed care related issues.
Collects detailed information of trauma admissions (motor vehicle accident, personal injury, and/or worker's compensation) to determine accident-related liability.
Appropriately codes insurance plans in EPIC system for billing purposes.
Work directly with insurance companies, the denial coordinator and the clinical staff and/or provider to supply necessary information to appeal denied claims and/or authorization requests as applicable
Appropriately code insurance plans within EPIC system for billing purposes.
Provide backup support for other Managed Care coordinators within the Centralized Managed Care & Price Estimates department.
For self-pay patients, complete duties associated with financial assistance determinations such as above/below the line. Including connecting patients with necessary social work or financial counseling to assist in the coverage process.
Complete necessary forms prior to upcoming procedures, admissions, and/or appointments (i.e. Non-Covered Charges Form (NCCF), Advanced Beneficiary Notification (ABN) or Patient Financial Estimate (FE)) as required.
Work directly with the patients and clinical team to ensure patient is knowledgeable and understands their insurance benefits and/or financial obligations.

Instrumentation Protection & Maintenance: Develop and implement protection plans for piezometers, inclinometers, prisms, and other monitoring devices. Perform daily and weekly system health checks, troubleshoot offline or malfunctioning equipment, and maintain KPI reporting on monitoring system performance.
Real-Time Monitoring & Alerts: Monitor real-time systems to identify variances or threshold exceedances. Promptly notify the Engineer of Record (EoR) and site engineers of system alerts and support follow-up actions.
Installation & Data Collection: Coordinate with contractors on installation of new and replacement field instrumentation. Collect monitoring data-piezometers, inclinometers, prisms, and related measurements-for environmental reporting, EoR reviews, and engineering analyses.
Technology Evaluation & Program Support: Assess the effectiveness of existing monitoring systems and research emerging technologies such as Sensemetrics, InSAR, and radar scanning. Assist site engineers in developing training materials and documentation to support the monitoring program.
Operational Support: Provide field support for tailings and water operations, including sand sampling and KPI data collection such as freeboard, beach width, and seepage measurements. Perform additional duties as needed to support TSF monitoring and operational reliability.
Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and initiative.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or equivalency.
Minimum 1 year of experience in tailings or water operations/maintenance.
Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to work effectively with diverse teams, including internal staff, contractors, instrumentation providers, and engineering consultants.
Strong communication skills.
SAP experience for notification entry and follow-up.
Basic surveying techniques.
Exposure to electronic system troubleshooting (e.g., battery systems, solar panels, cables).
Understanding of operational areas including Mine, Mill, SXEW, and Tailings & Water Reclamation Facilities.
Combination of office and some mine site work with exposure to dust, loud noise, temperature extremes, wet conditions and uneven terrain.
Some off-site work may be required, including interactions with vendors and contractors.
All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty'. Additional training and/or testing may be required. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
