Water's Edge Resort & Spa history

The Knothe’s enjoyed this home and the town of Westbrook for nearly 20 years until the great depression took its toll and The Knothe Family had to sell their property in 1940.

1962: Bill Hanh and his sister, Ruth, threw their greatest bash, in which they raised $54,000 in just one night.

As such, she built a brilliant country house in Westbrook with her partner, Elizabeth Fisher Read, which they called “Salt Meadow.” When Read died in 1971, Lape donated the grounds to the United States Fish Wildlife Service.

Like many of the famous resort hotels in the Catskills and Poconos, Bill Hahn's Hotel began to decline during the 1970s, as people with money pursued a variety of other travel and vacation options. It all came to an end on April 15, 1979, Easter Sunday, when Hahn died after a heart attack at 66.

Ruth Hahn Richter died soon after her brother, and the doors were closed for good by the fall of 1980.

In 1982, Michael Dattilo, a real estate developer from Spring Valley, New York bought the vacant and crumbling inn.

After winning zoning approval to reopen the property as the Four Seasons Resort and Health Spa, the owners shifted gears in 1985 with plans for the state's first time-share resort.

1986: DGG Properties began restoring the resort, which had become dilapidated while it was abandoned.

2017: Water’s Edge Resort and Spa joined Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing the nation’s finest historic destinations.
