WCA Hospital history

Doctor William Prendergast, only son of Judge Matthew and Abigail (Akin) Prendergast, was born February 28, 1791, at Pawling, Dutchess county, New York and died at Chautauqua in 1857.

The association was founded in 1884, with Mrs.

That same year it initiated the organization of hospital activities, and on May 23, 1885, WCA was incorporated.

Doctor Charles Ellsworth Goodell, a direct descendant of Robert Goodell, was born in Springfield, town of Concord, Erie County on 1886, a son of John William and Elizabeth Jane (Ellsworth) Goodell.

Brooks Memorial Hospital, was established in 1888 in Dunkirk.

Communicable disease [made] 1893 a terrible year for Jamestown.

In 1907, "WCA Hospital" incorporated and continued to grow to meet the ever-changing health needs of our community.

In 1909, he opened another office in Dunkirk, and enjoyed the reputation for a high standard of ethics for which he enjoyed throughout his career.

In 1912, Chautauqua Institution built the Lodge, situated on the crest of College Hill.

A graduate from the University of Buffalo in 1913, he came to Jamestown and opened a practice.

In 1917, he was elected chairman of the Jamestown Board of Health.

The WCA Foundation began its first operations in 1982 with assets of $180,278.43.

WCA Hospital celebrates commemorative 125 anniversary year on May 23, 2010.

WCA Hospital welcomes first patient through the new front door of healthcare—a 18,000 square foot 21st Century Emergency Department on November 13, 2012.

March 1, 2013 — implemented hospital-wide electronic health record system.
