Weber State University company history timeline

1889

The university opened for students in 1889 with 98 students enrolled for classes on January 7.

1908

In the latter year, Moench was succeeded as principal by David O. McKay, who served in that position until 1908.

1924

Born in Ogden in 1924, Noorda went on to become the CEO of Novell Technology and led a team that created a groundbreaking file-sharing system and operating system.

1931

In 1931, the state passed legislation that acquired Weber College from the church.

1933

The college was a Mormon Church college until 1 July 1933 when the school was turn over to the State of Utah by an act of the state legislature.

1951

In 1951 the college moved from its downtown location in Ogden to a spacious and scenic area in the southeast bench area of the city.

1954

The community also had acted together to overcome by referendum vote in 1954 a move by Governor J. Bracken Lee to turn the school back to the Mormon Church.

1962

Weber College remained a junior college until 1962 when students began work at Weber as a four-year institution.

All of this change had come as result of tremendous growth of student numbers which by 1962 had reached 3,670 and by the strong support of faculty and citizens of the northern Utah area.

1963

The school became Weber State College in 1962, and in 1964 became a four-year college. It was a charter member of the Big Sky Conference in 1963.

1964

In 1964 it awarded its first bachelor’s degrees.

Weber State College awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1964.

1991

In 1991, the college became Weber State University, appropriately symbolizing its role as Utah’s first comprehensive regional university that also retains a community college mission.

1994

1996

Elizabeth Hall is named in honor of Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart, a longtime supporter and benefactor of the university and the Ogden community, who passed away in 1996.

2019

Lindquist Hall opened in January 2019.

2022

The Noorda Engineering, Applied Science and Technology Building is expected to open in fall of 2022.
