Weber-Stephen was originally incorporated on May 8, 1893 as Weber Bros.
It all started with George Stephen back in 1952, a worker at the Weber Metal works welding buoys for coastguards.
Because the grill became so successful after he began selling it in 1952, Stephen formed the barbecue division of the Weber Brothers factory.
Today’s modern Weber kettle is not far from the original re-design in 1956 and it is definitely one of the most popular barbecue grills in the world with the basic model selling for under $100.
The Weber-Stephen company, founded in 1958, developed an empire built on the many models of the original grill, but a variation on the original kettle was the mainstay and center of the company
1958: Weber-Stephen Products is established.
Following his tremendous success, Stephen acquired Weber Brothers Metal Works in 1959 and changed its name to Weber-Stephen Products Co.
George Stephen recognized the potential of gas and as early as 1972 made an attempt to incorporate it into his line of grills, but in the end he decided instead to focus on charcoal grills.
The 1981 Weber Charcoal grill is identified by lid vent with the modern embossed or “raised” WEBER logo.
Weber-Stephen, well behind in gas grill development to such heavyweight competitors as Sunbeam Products, invested the money and resources necessary to develop gas grills, premiering its Genesis line in 1985.
In 1989, the company now headed by Stephen, opened its first Weber Grill restaurant where a traditional Weber kettle was used to prepare all the food.
And when the Weber Genesis was introduced, it changed the design of gas barbecues forever.Sadly, George Stephen Snr. passed away in 1993, but the people of America have never forgotten that it was his simple invention that changed the way they cooked outdoors.
1995: Gas grill sales surpass charcoal grill sales.
The company also sued Sunbeam in 1998 over patent infringement involving the use of a sear grid on gas grills.
