Position Summary As an Aluminum Welder, you will use hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components, to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products. This position will be responsible for welding components of the ship and completing repairs or new builds on time, to specifications, and within scope of the project. Completes all the required company training and follows all company policies and procedures. Responsibilities Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits. Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits. Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding. Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors. Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding. Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material. Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications. Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment. Lie out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers. Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment. Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations. Connect and turn regulator valves to activate and adjust gas flow and pressure so that desired flames are obtained. Weld separately or in combination, using aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and other alloys. Determine required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques. Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required. Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter. Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals. Remove rough spots from work pieces, using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers. Position and secure work pieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools. Clean or degrease parts, using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths. Repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts, using cutting torches, straightening presses, and hand tools. Fill holes and increase the size of metal parts. Dismantle metal assemblies or cut scrap metal, using thermal-cutting equipment such as flame-cutting torches or plasma-arc equipment. Check grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instruments. Gouge metals, using the air-arc gouging process. Guide and direct flames or electrodes on or across work pieces to straighten, bend, melt, or build up metal. Preheat work pieces prior to welding or bending, using torches or heating furnaces. Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies. Set up and use ladders and scaffolding as necessary to complete work. Hammer out bulges or bends in metal work pieces. POSITION SUMMARY Plan, layout, weld, install, test and repair all types of pipe and similar tubular products in accordance with plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Work with other crafts as instructed by supervision. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Because Eastern Shipbuilding is continually growing to meet the needs of our customers; the essential duties and responsibilities may be different than described. * Comply with Company, federal, state, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations, and policies while performing duties. * Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. * Review layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders in preparation for welding or cutting metal components. * Complete welds to the specified standards using appropriate equipment and materials. * Install and verify the operation of high-pressure steel pipes and fittings. * Repair and replace any damaged pipe; fabricate and install metal fittings; install supports, valves, and other control equipment; bolt, clamp, or weld parts to secure in position for welding. * Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble, weld, and install all types of pipes and/ or similar tubular products. * Test installed piping systems and install other related items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications. * Set up equipment and weld parts, using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas welding equipment. * Troubleshoot equipment. * Produce high-quality welds, including watertight penetrations with a variety of materials including weld steel, stainless, and aluminum. * Work with minimal supervision. * Perform other duties as assigned. * Successfully pass a 6G (6" pipe coupon) Stainless Steel, CUNI, & Aluminum - TIG. * Successfully pass a 6G (6" weld coupon) Carbon Stell - root and cap. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES May indirectly supervise and/or train subordinates. REQUIREMENTS Education/ Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalence plus three to five years of pipe welding experience desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Requires working knowledge of equipment, work processes, and techniques used in measuring fitting and welding steel. Requires x-ray pipe welding experience with the ability to weld pipe in all positions and mirror weld. Requires knowledge of welding symbols, ship terminology, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and American Bureau of Shipbuilding (ABS) standards. Must pass SMAW 6G Pipe Test to become ABS Certified. Skills: Ability to read and comprehend written, verbal, or diagram forms or plans. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and verbal instructions. Ability to read and understand blueprints. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and employees. Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure. Ability to read a tape measure. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstanding extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.
