JOB TITLE SHIP FITTER 1/C JOB TYPE Full-Time JOB CLASSIFICATION Hourly EXEMPTION TYPE Non-Exempt EDUCATION High School Diploma/GED JOB DESCRIPTION A First-Class Shipfitter typically has four (4) or more years of experience in the layout, alignment, and fitting of structural metal parts. The position operates under regular supervision and may act as a lead mechanic on projects requiring up to eight (8) trade personnel. Flexibility to work long hours, including weekends and nights, is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Positions, aligns, fits, and welds parts to form complete units or sub units, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools
Verifies conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes
Tack-welds fitted parts together
Lays out and examines metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met
Aligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers
Locates and marks work piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications
Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting
Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences
Moves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes
Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components

High school diploma or GED and 4 or more years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.
During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:
Hard hat
Ear plugs or attenuator

Advex Corporation is seeking an experienced Marine and Industrial Pipe Welder to join our team. The ideal candidate will have shipboard and industrial welding experience and a strong understanding of various welding processes, including SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW/MIG. A hands-on weld test will be required, which includes Cuni socket and butt weld tests, as well as carbon steel butt welds using 309 filler metal, all performed in a 6G or 6GR position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform multi-pass, all-position fillet and butt welds using **SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc ), ** and **GMAW/MIG (Gas Metal Arc Welding) ** processes.
- Weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper-nickel pipes using SMAW and GTAW processes, including fusion inserts and open root welding.
- Execute mirror welds using SMAW and GTAW processes.
- Use an oxygen/propane heating torch for pre-heating materials as required.
- Work in physically demanding environments such as shipboard settings, sub-assemblies, ladders, and staging areas.
- Adhere to all OSHA safety regulations, particularly those relevant to shipbuilding and industrial environments.
- Utilize fillet gauges, butt gauges, and a six-inch scale to ensure accurate measurements and weld quality.
Experience and Skills Required:
- Minimum of five years of commercial or naval experience as a first-class pipe welder.
- Proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW/MIG welding techniques.
- Ability to perform welding in challenging positions (6G/6GR) and environments.

Day to Day Duties:
Performing arc and torch cutting and gouging.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Requires working knowledge of equipment, work processes, and techniques used in measuring fitting and welding steel. Requires x-ray pipe welding experience with the ability to weld pipe in all positions and mirror welding. Requires knowledge of welding symbols, ship terminology, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and American Bureau of Shipbuilding (ABS) standards. Must pass SMAW 6G Pipe Test to become ABS Certified.
Skills: Ability to read and comprehend written, verbal, or diagram forms or plans. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and verbal instructions. Ability to read and understand blueprints. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and employees. Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure. Ability to read a tape measure.
