The Construction & Maintenance Department is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Company's natural gas distribution system.
The successful candidate must fully demonstrate specified welding competencies within twelve (12) months of acceptance of the position and is subject to periodic competency testing.
What you will do:
Performs stick welding on steel natural gas lines, including downhill welds using 6010 and 7010 welding rods and uphill welds using 7018 hot rods.
Performs various construction and maintenance activities the majority of the time.
Installs pressure control fittings.
Completes steel main tie-ins, installing steel services and repair fittings.
Installs stations, farm taps and meter sets.
Performs natural gas leak investigation and detection and all installation and repair procedures of damaged service lines and plastic mains.
Sets up common Department of Transportation approved worksites.
Pinpoints and grade leaks on the natural gas distribution system.
Calibrates instruments.
Uses self-contained breathing apparatus equipment (when needed).
Completes a variety of paperwork in writing and electronic work queues.
Safely drives a company vehicle.
Operator Qualifications involve written guidelines and requirements natural gas employees must follow to ensure the safe and responsible operation of natural gas pipelines. Required, annual Operator Qualification testing involves both written and hands-on components to ensure those who perform covered, safety-sensitive tasks on the natural gas system are trained, knowledgeable, and qualified.
This position reports to our North Durham Operations Center located in Durham, North Carolina.
This position has two levels (Welder-Trainee and Welder A) which allows for progression over time.
Who You Are:
0 - 12 months construction/utility experience.
Experience with common hand and power tools.
Ability to calibrate instruments and use self-contained breathing apparatus and pipe squeeze-off equipment.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positive customer and contractor interactions is critical.
Basic computer and internet navigation skills are key.
Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive driving procedures.
Ability to work independently and as a team member within a diverse team.
Availability for overtime, as needed.
Availability for natural gas emergency response during the workday, as well as in the evenings and some weekends, when on-call.
Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Durham area. Emergency response time is a critical measure for the Company and candidates are required to consistently meet this requirement, including when on-call.
Occasional heavy lifting up to 80 lbs. independently.
Preferred:
6 - 12 months of construction/utility experience.
Welding certificate.
Experience welding in the Company's fabrication shop, under direct supervision.
6 months welding experience.
Related welding experience and knowledge highly preferred.
Good mechanical aptitude.
General knowledge of pressure control and tapping/stopping procedures.
Bilingual (Spanish) candidates.

Licenses:
Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving history.

Other Working Conditions:
Position works within a crew structure and/or as a floating welder.
Welding duties are performed while utilizing the appropriate personal protective equipment.
Work is performed primarily outside in varying weather conditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, etc.)
Position requires continuous travel throughout the service territory with frequent stops, entering/exiting the company vehicle, safely parking in a wide variety of situations, and driving in construction zones.
Position may encounter agitated/irate customers.
Physical Requirements include but are not limited to:

Qualifications You Must Have:
Typically requires HS diploma (or equivalent, e.g. G.E.D in the US) or vocational/technical education in related discipline with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
1+ years GTAW welding experience and/or 1+ years welding fabrication experience
Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations as required by ITAR.
Qualifications We Prefer:
2+ years GTAW welding experience of material less than 1/16".
Associates Degree in welding or a certificate from a vocational/technical Welding program
Automatic, mechanized, semi-automatic, and manual welding experience
Familiarity with AWS D17.1 Welding Code
Previous experience in a manufacturing setting.
A strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work.
The ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.

Lay out, fit and weld fabricated, cast and forged pipe components to assemble structural forms (machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, piping headers, furnace shells, building and bridge parts according to blueprints and welding/metallurgy knowledge.

Position, align and fit components together; secure parts with bolts, clamps and tack welds.
