Scope of Performance: This position is that of a Welding Technician, McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, Oklahoma. This position will be for a full-time on-site technician and shall be subject to Department of Transportation physical examinations and certification requirements. Schedules will be dependent on the requirements of the customer per specified contract guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate welding equipment including MIG, TIG, Stick, or Flux-Core
Responsible for assembling and fabricating metal structures and components using various welding techniques
Strong understanding of welding processes and techniques including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW
Ensure the quality and safety of welds utilized in machinery and structure
Oversee NDT examination operations ensuring proper techniques and procedures are utilized
Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and work orders to fix complex equipment
Perform visual and dimensional inspections of welds and base materials

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Welder III to join our team in Norfolk, VA. This position is responsible for performing complex welding tasks in support of ship repair and maritime fabrication projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in structural and pipe welding, a deep understanding of shipbuilding materials and techniques, and experience working in a shipyard or maritime industrial environment.
The successful candidate will join our Fleet Services Group, performing various ship repair, modernization, and Alteration Installation Team (AIT) projects in support of U.S. Navy and commercial maritime clients. This role requires precision, efficiency, and a commitment to quality workmanship in both shop and shipboard environments.
Essential duties & responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Join, fabricate, and repair metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques.
Perform various welding processes to repair, modify and install various pipes, structures, foundations and fittings associated with shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic and water systems.
Fabricate and install fixtures and jigs required for welding process alignments.
Interpret blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process.
Select required welding filler materials, joint design, heat ranges and most effective or required welding process/procedure to ensure quality welding operations IAW TWD.
Inspect completed welds to determine structural soundness and adherence to NAVSEA, ABS & AWS standards.

Demonstrate the ability to estimate a drawing package / installation.

Prepare and align components for welding through layout, measuring, beveling, and fitting while monitoring for distortion or heat-related issues.
Possess and maintain personal tools/equipment necessary to accomplish their trade.
Troubleshoot equipment and material issues, change out wire spools, tips/nozzles or adjust, and notify management when replacements are needed.
Must be proficient at reading and interpreting weld symbols on blueprints and drawings.
Conduct self-inspections to ensure work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings and specifications.
Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen, providing direction as a senior mechanic when required.
Maintain a good attendance record, demonstrate a positive and professional attitude, work well with others, take pride in your work, and be receptive to constructive feedback from mentors (supervisor, PMT, etc.).
Certification Requirements
Must be qualified in 3-position SMAW carbon steel plate and 3-position FCAW carbon steel plate.
Hold a carbon arcing qualification, plus one additional SMAW certification (not carbon steel) and one additional FCAW plate certification (not carbon steel).
Hold a SMAW 110-18 6GT Pipe certification, and either a GMAW-P Aluminum certification or 3 SMAW and 3 FCAW pipe/plate certifications.
Experience Requirements
4 - 6 years of experience as a Welder in a shipyard.
Other Requirements
Must be able to work in various environmental conditions including outdoor weather, heights, confined spaces, loud noise, and exposure to airborne particles or fumes.
Must be able to wear a respirator as required for specific tasks and maintain compliance with fit testing and respiratory protection protocols.
Regularly required to sit, reach, and use hands for handling or operating tools and equipment.
Occasionally required to stoop, bend, squat, crawl, and climb ladders or structures (e.g., masts, tanks, voids).

Selects proper materials and requirements to perform welding functions. Fabricates and installs fixtures and jigs required for welding process alignments
Responsible for welding of steel, aluminum and stainless-steel materials using the SMAW, GTAW and/or GMAW processes in all positions on steel boats, aluminum boats, barges and shop fabrication assignments.
The individual must also be able to read, interpret, and follow blueprints or technical drawings and understand associated welding symbols.
