Aluminum is the most common nonferrous metal and the most prevalent metallic material in the Earth's crust. Aluminum is never found in its metallic form in nature, but its compounds can be found in varying degrees in nearly all minerals, vegetation, and animals. Cans, foils, cooking utensils, door frames, kegs, and aeroplane pieces are all made of aluminum.
- Research and Development Lab Welding Aluminum coupons
- Leverage manual welding experience to support production and development needs for welding of Stainless Steel and Aluminum alloys.
8. MIG
MIG is a specific type of welding in which two base materials are welded together using a solid wire electrode fed through a welding gun and into the weld pool.
- Recommended Pulsed MIG and two hard-faced materials for final application that resulted in significant schedule savings.
- Implemented new semi-automated welding equipment in each production line for reparations (MIG, FCAW).
9. NDE
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is a term used in describing quantitative measurements and locating a defect. It helps identify material properties like formability and fracture toughness. Majority of people know the technology used in NDE from the medical industries such as x-ray and ultrasound.
- Modified existing visual inspection and introduced new NDE methods to ensure up-to-date inspection technology and techniques are used to improve production.
- Monitored welding activities, performed visual weld inspections, coordinated vendor NDE services, and initiated required welding documentation.
10. Resistance Welding
- Provided resistance welding application consultations.
- Performed Resistance welding machine certifications.
11. Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, chromium, carbon, and some other metals with corrosion-resistant properties. The components of steel include less than 1% carbon, 1% manganese, and small quantities of other elements such as phosphorus, silicon, sulfur, and oxygen. Iron and carbon are the two essential components of steel. Stainless steel is resistant to tarnishing and rust.
- Design of welding procedures including implementation of new Zeron-100 stainless steel
- Received letter of commendation in customer service from the U.S. Air Force Department in solving a stainless steel application.
12. Brazing
- Defined and administered training of welding and brazing personnel including hands-on instruction.
- Can perform other operations such as brazing, soldering, flame and arc-cutting, and surface hardening.
13. SMAW
- Developed proprietary coated SMAW electrode for repair welding of 3l6L piping for pulp and paper industry
- Use SMAW to make UT quality butt welds on column splices.
14. Troubleshoot
Troubleshooting is the process of analyzing and fixing any kind of problem in a system or a machine. Troubleshooting is the detailed yet quick search in the system for the main source of an issue and solving it.
- Maintain, troubleshoot and plan maintenance for the manufacturing systems in the Body and White portion of Jefferson North Assembly Plant.
- Program and troubleshoot automated work cells involving up to 211 welds per program.
15. Laser Welding
- Provided support in the purchasing process of the new blade tip repair laser welding machine from Huffman Multi-Axis Laser Systems.

What type of skills will young welding engineers need?
Director, Center for Air Transportation Systems Research Assoc. Professor, System Engineering and Operations Research Dept., George Mason University
Too many times we rush in with a technology solution that does not really solve the problem.
Also go and listen to the stakeholders. Understand their perspectives and account for these perspectives in the design solution.
Too many times we rush in with a technology solution that causes more problems than it solves because we have not truly understood the perspectives of the stakeholders.
What technical skills for a welding engineer stand out to employers?
Adjunct Instructor, Clarkson University
Respectfully, today's graduates do not understand that being able to text and use social media does not prepare them for "real" computer skills. Many students that I have in high school and in college do not have proper writing skills, document formatting skills, or document management skills to know how to save documents properly and where to save to.
