Wellness Center At the YMCA company history timeline

1948

1948: Started a day camp that includes swims at Playland, kickball, softball, badminton, crafts, etc.

1951

1951 – Charles Groves served the longest standing term to date as the FREMONT FAMILY'S YMCA’s Executive Director, holding the position for 20 consecutive years.

1955

In November of 1955, University of Oregon President, O. Meredith Wilson, gave the address for the YMCA's opening Cornerstone Ceremony.

In 1955 the Y’s original pool is built and named the Pa Cope Memorial Pool in memory of this legendary Camp Director.

1960

In the mid 1960’s the Y begins its relationship with the Rye Association for the Handicapped, which continues today.

The Early Days: Grassroots Commitment In 1960, Kenneth A. Thiel received permission from the Evanston YMCA to open a satellite Y in the Village of Northbrook.

1965

Under his leadership programs flourished, membership soared and, in 1965, a proposal was approved for a new facility to be built on a corner lot on Military Memorial Park.

1970

1970’s: The fitness movement begins to take off as the Y provides a new Universal gym, cardiovascular programming and hires a full-time women’s director.

1972

Karate, Judo, kinder-gym, squash and handball are offered in the new courts that open in 1972.

1996

In the summer of 1996, the YMCA Board authorized a capital improvement campaign that ultimately raised $400,000.

1998

Following the death of Evelyn Sidner in 1998, the YMCA discovered that this tremendous friend had bequested yet another financial gift - $4,500,050 had been designated to the YMCA by Mrs.

2000

The Y movement began in Wilson, NC in February 2000 when about 80 interested residents met at Forest Hills Middle School.

2002

The Fitness Company was purchased in February 2002.

2003

February 8th, 2003 – Grand Opening of new Y expansion and renovation which includes: a new 6 lane pool, fitness center, lobby and gymnasium (a total expansion of 25,000 sq. ft.)

2004

2004 –The FREMONT FAMILY YMCA Sidner Indoor Ice Arena became a reality on April 19, 2004.

2006

In the fall of 2006, the YMCA opened its 10,000-square foot state-of-the-art Hazel R. Keene Wellness Center.

2008

Sidner’s estate had also earmarked funds through 2008 as an endowment for youth membership, bringing the family’s total gifts to over $7.6 million.

2009

2009 – The FREMONT FAMILY YMCA has seen its membership grow to over 9,000 members.

2011

2011 – The year started off with a bang at the FREMONT FAMILY YMCA with the announcement that membership had gone over the 10,000 member mark.

2015

2015 - The Christensen Family YMCA Camp and the Hazel R. Keene Lodge are completed and open to the community.

2018

2018 - The Dillon Family Aquatic Center opened at the Fremont Family YMCA in February of 2018.

2019

2019 - The Fremont Family YMCA converts the former instructional pool into a new indoor field turf room.

2021

February 2021 e-news: Your Y's reopening is cause for celebration
