A Brief Overview
Under the supervision of the supervisor/manager and a physician in the department, who is responsible for the useand interpretation of ultrasound procedures, conducts sonographic procedures on assigned patients of all ages through the use of ultrasound diagnostic equipment. Performs vascular studies, including peripheral vascular, abdominal and carotid duplex scans as requested. Uses complex ultrasound equipment to perform echocardiographic procedures. Participates in training of residents and ultrasound students. Does not supplant the physician in the sphere of decision making required to establish a diagnosis, but will assist in gathering sonographic, duplex and other medical data necessary to reach a medical diagnosis and decision. Shows a high degree of judgment and skill in use of sonographic equipment. Ensures that equipment is constantly functional and maintained for immediate use. Maintains records and reports on equipment, procedures performed and billing.

What you will do
Documents observations made during the procedure for final interpretation by the physician or other qualified medical professional; obtains pertinent diagnostic images for record documentation when presenting cases.
Ensures that ultrasound equipment & accessories are maintained and functioning. Reports problems to Lead Tech and supervisor.
Explains examination process to the patient and instructs and assists patient throughout the procedure.
Operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment, observes sound wave pattern produced, produces and processes diagnostic images and presents completed sonograms to physician.
Participates in maintaining records for research cases. Participates as needed in evaluation of new equipment for research or possible future use in department.
Participates in training of residents and ultrasound students.
Performs a variety of complex sonographic procedures utilizing ultrasonic high frequency sound waves to detect abnormalities including masses, abscesses, and stones.
Performs appropriate infection prevention techniques including CIDEX testing, neutralization disposal. Performs proper probe handling & cleaning according to procedures if necessary.
Performs basic Doppler scans, i.e.: hepatic/portal veins, hepatic art, venous Doppler studies, renal transplant art/v. Doppler within allotted time frames; Spot check exams consistently show understanding and demonstration of proper doppler technique and documentation of doppler information, color and doppler spectral imaging, color & spectralscale setting at a velocity that demonstrates psv after flow direction and angle correction displayed appropriate to vessel.
Performs procedures that require familiarity and use as needed the following equipment: 2D gray scale and color doppler and pulsed wave scanners, BP cuffs & sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, analog strip chart recorder, segmental blood pressure machine & hand held CW doppler.
Performs without assistance the following exams: peripheral vascular duplex, abdominal duplex, segmental blood pressure & exercise testing, carotids, & other physiology exams as requested.
Reviews patient medical history in chart information system. Reloads prior exams for comparison. Utilizes ancillary equipment appropriately (Kinetdx, PACS - Picture Archiving and Communication systems).
Spots check exams for required views and adequate demonstration of anatomy. Completes exam within required timeframe.

Reviews patient medical history and relevant prior imaging in electronic medical record and imaging chart (PACS).
When necessary, spot checks exams for required views and adequate demonstration of anatomy and pathology (for example, if working with students). Completes exam within required timeframe.

Participates in department research cases.

Changing the Future of the Echocardiogram department: The Echocardiogram department serves patient populations including adult and adult congenital. Allied Health team members serve on the front lines with opportunities to care for 120-140 patient visits per day in an IACEL accredited facility using the latest equipment on the market with many opportunities to teach ultrasound students and cardiology fellows, while also participating in research in a work friendly environment.

For more than 125 years, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital has provided leading-edge inpatient, outpatient, and emergent care to the Lebanon County community. Schedule PRN, Dayshift, Weekend Rotation, 1 Holiday per year, Minimum commitment of 16 hours per month. Performs various stress tests and other non-invasive cardiac diagnostic procedures utilizing clinical knowledge and professional judgement within the parameters of professional and departmental standards and protocols. Prepares, assesses, and provides care for the patient throughout the procedure. Tests performed may include exercise stress test, pharmacological stress tests, stress echocardiograms and nuclear stress tests. Other testing done may include 12-lead EKG's, EEG's, EECP, and scanning Holter Monitors. Tests are performed in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
Essential Functions:
* Possesses the knowledge and skills level to administer treadmill and pharmacological protocols for stress tests which includes: monitor, record, and interpret EKG tracings for diagnostic purposes, determine appropriate testing protocol, recognize presence of permanent pace maker, calculate and record diagnostic parameters, monitor and evaluate patient tolerance to test including chest pain, and prepare study for physician interpretation.
* Responsible for patient safety including recognizing cardiac arrhythmias and respond according to emergency protocols utilizing BLS skills and obtaining emergency medical equipment.
* Provides care to patient: obtain history, assesses patient condition, collects and interprets clinical information for appropriateness for ordered test, explains procedure, obtains consent, provides personal care/hygiene
* Performs electrocardiograms. Possesses knowledge of rhythm recognition to notify physician of abnormal EKG and patient's total condition throughout the test. May also be responsible for processing EKG's from various units/off-site locations including reconciling errors and assigning EKG's for interpretation.
* Maintains clinical information, and enters and retrieves patient data from software applications and EMR specific to testing being done.
* Maintains operational knowledge of Noninvasive Cardiology equipment with ability to troubleshoot this equipment.
* Performs clerical duties (as applicable to specific department): schedule procedures utilizing knowledge of test codes, inventory management, transport tracking. Answers phone.
* Trains/precepts new employees
* Additional training/competency to be completed to independently perform other diagnostic procedures possibly done in department including EEG's, EECP, and Holter Monitor application and scanning.
