Wesley Medical Center company history timeline

1900

In March of 1900, a small medical facility opened in South Mississippi.

1903

In 1903, the Ross Sanitarium expanded to 40 beds, was renamed the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad Employees Hospital and moved into a larger building to better serve its patients.

1906

The hospital extended its usefulness in 1906, when it established the Gulf and Ship Island Hospital Training School for Nurses.

1912

History: Founded in 1912

1915

The new Wesley Hospital at the northwest corner of 11th and Harrison streets, of concrete and steel and faced in tapestry brick and terra cotta, was built in 1915.

1921

The Mississippi Annual Conference of the Methodist Church took over the operation of the hospital in 1921 and renamed it Methodist Hospital.

1943

The hospital was taken over by the United States War Department in March, 1943, as a hospital for military personnel then training in Kansas City, and $50,000 was spent putting the structure in shape.

1972

The building was vacated in 1972 when the new $17-million facility for the college was built at 2105 Independence Avenue.

1997

Another significant change occurred in 1997, the hospital was renamed Wesley Medical Center and remains today a 211-bed facility, offering acute care, diagnostic and surgical facilities and numerous outpatient services.
