JOB GOAL:
A public safety position which assists administration in patrolling school grounds and in maintaining a safe and secure atmosphere for students and staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Must be skilled in handling situations involving physical contact between two or more persons in a tactful and efficient manner.
2. To physically restrain disruptive students when necessary.
3. Must meet CPR training requirements and obtain certification in first aid prior to the end of officer's probationary period.
4. Patrols interior and exterior of buildings and supervises traffic of school corridors, restrooms, entrances, exits and passageways.
5. Identifies intruders and any other unauthorized persons, and regulates or controls their entry and passage in the public school building.
6. Assists authorized visitors by directing and explaining security regulations as necessary.
7. Directs school and traffic persons associated with fire alarms, cafeteria use, busing and parking facility access.
8. Assists as directed during athletic, social and academic activities scheduled in the school building during and after school hours.
9. Directs, controls and investigates causes of school disturbances and other internal and external problems, as well as writing reports of such incidents(s) which may assist the police in cases of arrest.
10. Assists law enforcement officer(s) as directed.
11. Assumes such other functions as may be determined.
12. Must be able to pass training on conduct, use of physical intervention, alcohol and drug use, after school activities, traffic enforcement, laws, use of local police, self defense tactics, use of metal detector, fraternization with students, student and employee complaints, procedure for evidence, use of radio and escorting of students.
13.Controls vehicular traffic and enforces parking regulations.
14.Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

* Provides traffic and parking enforcement duties on campus in an effort to ensure the safety of students, staff, faculty and visitors. Assists motorists with disabled vehicles as necessary and appropriate.
* Responds to complaints and calls for service from students, faculty, staff and visitors in a timely and professional manner. Conducts thorough and detailed preliminary investigations of all reported incidents on campus by interviewing complainants, victims and/or witnesses at the scene of a crime or incident to gather relevant information. Drafts reports in narrative form describing events, activities, investigation or enforcement action taken.
* Assists members of the University community with routine information or requests for information.
* Inspects and maintains issued equipment to ensure effective operating conditions are maintained. Receives and dispatches calls for service as well as monitors access controls, intrusion detection, body cameras and CCTV systems.
* Maintains public safety related skills and abilities. Actively participates in in-service training programs. Provides field training to new recruits.

SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Security Co-Chiefs or their designee, will conduct continual tours throughout the grounds and buildings to ensure overall security of the campus.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Monitor cameras and fire alarms.
Perform fire drills and lockdown drills as required.
Perform monthly checks of other devices to include, but not limited to, emergency lighting, exterior lighting. Report any deficiencies via email to the Assistant Director of Operations and the Security Chief. Submit SchoolDude to Plant Operations.
Handle transport needs of staff and students requiring medical assistance to the SHC.
Assist staff and/or students during emergencies.
Provide written reports of any unusual activities using the Daily Activity Report and, when necessary, the Incident Report.
Monitor areas in buildings or outside when used by staff or particularly outside organizations. Secure building areas when events are finished and the area is vacated.
Report through emails and/or SchoolDudes all exit, stairway and exterior lights in need of repair.
Report any unusual conditions such as loss of power, heat, telephone, fire alarms, etc. to the Director of Plant Operations or his assistant immediately. Also, notify the Assistant Director of Operations.
Responsible for covering weekend and holiday shifts. Should also be willing to accept other shifts as needed (i.e. coverage for vacation/sick leave time, etc.).
Willingness to work overtime as needed.
Perform monthly equipment checks as directed by the Security Co-Chiefs.
Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Maturity of judgment and an ability to act with tact and restraint while utilizing conflict resolution techniques.

The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Security Guard
Department: Security
Supervisor: Security Co-Chiefs
Description: Full time - 12 Months Benefits Eligible
Union Status: Non-Collective Bargaining (non-union)
Work Schedule: Sunday, 8:00am - 10:00pm
Monday, 5:00pm - 11:00pm
Friday, 2:00pm - 11:00pm
Saturday, 4:00pm - 10:00pm
SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Security Co-Chiefs or their designee, will conduct continual tours throughout the grounds and buildings to ensure overall security of the campus.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Monitor cameras and fire alarms.
Perform fire drills and lockdown drills as required.
Perform monthly checks of other devices to include, but not limited to, emergency lighting, exterior lighting. Report any deficiencies via email to the Assistant Director of Operations and the Security Chief. Submit SchoolDude to Plant Operations.
Handle transport needs of staff and students requiring medical assistance to the SHC.
Assist staff and/or students during emergencies.
Provide written reports of any unusual activities using the Daily Activity Report and, when necessary, the Incident Report.
Monitor areas in buildings or outside when used by staff or particularly outside organizations. Secure building areas when events are finished and the area is vacated.
Report through emails and/or SchoolDudes all exit, stairway and exterior lights in need of repair.
Report any unusual conditions such as loss of power, heat, telephone, fire alarms, etc. to the Director of Plant Operations or his assistant immediately. Also, notify the Assistant Director of Operations.
Responsible for covering weekend and holiday shifts. Should also be willing to accept other shifts as needed (i.e. coverage for vacation/sick leave time, etc.).
Willingness to work overtime as needed.
Perform monthly equipment checks as directed by the Security Co-Chiefs.
Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Maturity of judgment and an ability to act with tact and restraint while utilizing conflict resolution techniques.
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
Practices discretion and maintains strict confidentiality.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative setting.
Must possess High School Diploma, or equivalent.
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Must possess a valid State of Connecticut Security Guard Certification (i.e. Guard Card).
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
American Sign Language proficiency strongly preferred or commitment to learn.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Non-Exempt, 12-month position.

$1000 sign-on bonus after one year of service (only brand-new hires eligible; rehired employees not eligible for sign-on bonus) .

Job Summary:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain a professional demeanor, aiding customers, employees, visitors, and guests
Maintain a visible presence in the facility / building assigned
Monitor the environment, with the ability to detect suspicious and unsafe activity
Responsible for becoming familiar with incoming and outgoing traffic, know the customers, tenants, visitors, and guests
Greet customers, visitors, staff, tenants, guests in a professional manner always
Answer all phones in a professional manner
Permit authorized persons to enter property and monitor entrances and exits
Know the facility / building policies and procedures; enforce them within the limits of the position
Perform required patrols of designated areas on foot or in vehicle
Observe departing personnel to protect against the theft of company property and ensure authorized removal of property is conducted within appropriate customer requirements
Follow established emergency action planning, fire protection and safety standard procedures
Monitor alarms and systems
Prepare reports on accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities, as directed
Perform operational functions such as scheduling, overtime management, and staffing training when necessary
Test and inspect fire extinguishers and other fire protection devices to ensure compliance
Prepare reports on inspections, violations, and recommendations
Perform fire drills and additional safety as needed
May provide fire fighting duties during emergencies and train in emergency response plans

Fire Safety Director's License
Minimum High School Diploma, GED or the equivalent

Write routine correspondence, to include log entries and incident reporting
Previous contract security, law enforcement, military, customer service experience helpful

Must keep all security certification and training requirements current, including but not limited to, permits, certifications and/or licenses to carry and use firearms or other weapons on school property;
If the candidate has prior service within the military, the candidate must have received an honorable discharge;
Must participate in and pass a full background investigation which will be required;

The Seymour Public Schools has approved the hiring of Armed School Security Officers and authorizes the placement of armed school security officers in our school buildings to provide for the safety and security of students and school personnel during the school day as well as times that the Superintendent deems necessary. Substitute School Security Guards will be used to cover the absences of our School Security Guards on an as needed basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES·
• The observation and reporting of any unlawful act;
• The prevention of theft or misappropriation of any item of value;
• The control of access to premises being protected;
• The maintenance of order and safety at school events;
• Protection of district property, students, staff and persons and property on or about district property or while attending
district sponsored activities.
• Armed First Responder, conduct security patrols of all school grounds.
• First Responder to all emergencies on campus to protect life and property.
• Conduct preventive patrols and routine security checks of all school grounds and structures.
• Look for possible criminal activity, persons needing assistance as well as maintenance issues. Report any
maintenance issues to the Facilities Department. Report criminal activity to the Seymour Police Department.
• Respond to all emergencies on school grounds and request additional response if needed.
• Armed School Security Officers shall assist in Criminal Investigations, complaints and reports.
• Secure and unlock buildings upon request by faculty, staff and facility personnel.
• Ensure that any hazard/incident may be made as safe as possible including attempting to remedy the situation
entirely.
• Serve as the emergency notifying agency for facilities related issues.
• Work with responding personnel (Local and State Police, Fire Department, Utilities, EMT's, Paramedics) in handling
emergencies at schools including medical emergencies.
• Set up barricades and other traffic controls to assist various facilities projects and arrange for the towing of vehicles
out of restricted areas.
• Perform any other duty as directed by the Superintendent, School Administration and/or their designee.
• Respond to all reported disturbances, emergencies, and suspicious circumstances in the school, classroom, related structures or events and report findings when necessary.
• Assist Administration/Staff in handling uncooperative or confrontational, and non-affiliates on school grounds.
• Perform room, book bag, and person (s) searches as required in the presence of administrators.
PARKING ENFORCEMENT
• Enforce all parking regulations in school grounds and parking lots.
• Patrol the parking areas during the enforcement hours.
• Request local authorities to tow or ticket vehicles found in violation of the parking regulations (offense warrants).
ADMINISTRATIVE
• Document in a report any individual found disturbing the school or committing minor criminal offenses or violating
school regulations of criminal/threatening manner. When appropriate, forward this report to local police and the
office of School Administration or District Office.
• Complete all required reports and associated paperwork in a timely, accurate, and complete fashion.
• Comply with and enforce administrative policies and procedures.
• Comply with Seymour Public Schools emergency protocols, policies, and procedural handbook.
• Can be asked to perform additional tasks such as cafe duty, escorting students, monitoring, halls sweeps, etc.
• Perform any other duty as directed by the Superintendent, School Administration and/or their designee.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Retired members of an organized local, state or federal government agency as a law enforcement officer, defined by
section 53a-3 of the general statute, 13 USC § 926C - Carrying of concealed firearms by qualified retired law
enforcement officers pursuant to the standards of the Connecticut Public Act. 13-188.
• A local, state or federal law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 10-15 years or more, and separated from such
service in good standing.
ARMED SCHOOL SECURITY OFFICERS SHALL POSSESS:
• Current State of Connecticut Pistol Permit.
• HR 218 yearly verified qualification.
• Current State of Connecticut Driver's License.
• Armed School Security Officers will be in an identifiable Seymour Public Schools attire, carry his/her personal firearm
approved under HR 218, an, possess appropriate security equipment as necessary.
MANDATORY DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS:
• A letter or certificate stating that the candidate is a graduate of an approved Police Officer Standards and Training
(P.O.S.T.) and/or State Police Academy.
• A letter of recommendation from the candidate's previous Police Chief indicating that he/she served as a local, state
or federal law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 10 - 15 years or more, and separated from such service in
good standing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and
lower body.

• Be able to work in various positions including but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling,
and squatting for extended periods of time.
