In 1822, the areas of West Haven and North Milford joined and became the town of Orange.
The deep harbor and beaches are somewhat protected by the “Breakwaters”, a series of stone walls constructed in the 1880’s.
The University of New Haven (founded 1920) is in the city.
In 1921 it was separated and incorporated as a town.
In 1927, "Lender's Beigel Bakery" was founded in the city by Polish immigrant Harry Lender.

English Puritans founded New Haven colony in 1638, and it reluctantly joined Connecticut colony (1665) and became a county in 1666; county government was abolished in 1960.
The business had grown to 600 employees by 1984, when it was sold to Kraft Foods.
