West Texas Rehab Center company history timeline

1953

The West Texas Rehabilitation Center is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that was founded in 1953 as a facility to treat children with cerebral palsy.

It is dubbed the "big country" and back in 1953, a big idea was born in a single elementary school classroom in Abilene, Texas.

1971

Least money raised: $85,000 from the first telethon in 1971

1975

“If a donor gives you something worth $500, maybe in 1975 that would bring $150 because you didn’t have enough people bidding on it," Martin said.

1980

For example, the 1980 show was televised live from both Abilene and San Angelo.

1982

The idea of a hospice program originated with the Junior League of San Angelo, Inc., in 1982.

1983

Thus, the Junior League Hospice Task Force was organized in 1983 to further research and outline plans for developing a viable home care hospice program for the terminally ill in San Angelo.

1986

Maule, an actor and singer who grew up on a farm 32 miles north of Sweetwater, has a familial connection with the telethon that started long before he became involved in the production in about 1986.

2015

McCoy headlined the 2015 telethon.

2018

In March of 2018, Hospice of San Angelo merged with West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
