WNCSource company history timeline

1966

In March, 1966 Western Carolina Community Action was incorporated by the North Carolina Secretary of State.

In August, 1966 Transylvania and Henderson County merged into a single Community Action Program.

1969

In February, 1969 the transportation department was formed at WCCA. It consisted of:

1979

This program was designed to help low-income families, elderly and disabled people keep fuel costs within the family budget by preventing energy waste. It was first called the Winterization Program in 1979 and funded by the Department of Energy.

1983

CETA was replaced in 1983 by a new federal plan that focuses on job training and private industry call Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). The JTPA matched workers to employers.

1986

In November 1986 WCCA was designated by Henderson County to receive a grant from the NC Department of Transportation to buy or refurbish seven or eight vans that would be used to transport older adults and disabled people.

1998

Since 1998, WCCA has developed sixty-four units of high quality affordable apartments in Transylvania County.

1999

In 1999 WCCA was awarded its first Early Head Start grant to serve 40 children in Transylvania County.

2000

WCCA opened a new center in Brevard in 2000 that can serve approximately 100 children.

2002

In June of 2002 WCCA started two “fixed routes” in Henderson County.

2003

In July 2003 NCDOT Intercity funds were used to add the blue route which runs to Fletcher and connects with Asheville Transit.

In October, 2003, WCCA purchased three acres in the Village of King Creek on Spartanburg Highway to build a new administrative building.

2008

In January of 2008 the Silvermont Opportunity Center opened for business in Brevard.

In June 2008 WCCA weatherization crews completed work on the agency’s last Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) units.

2009

In 2009 WCCA began two new housing repair programs.

2014

In 2014 WCCA acquired Excelsior Apartments in Brevard.

2015

With the addition of a chief financial officer in 2015, the title of executive director was changed to chief executive officer (CEO). The current CEO is David White.

In 2015 WCCA was awarded an Early Head Start/ Childcare Partnership grant.
