And the founding of Colorado State Normal School: 1901.
The cornerstone of North Hall (now known as Taylor Hall) was placed in October 1910, becoming the first building on the Normal School’s campus.
In 1923, the Normal School became a four-year institution; it was renamed Western State College.
In 1923 it became Western State College of Colorado and began offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
In 1923 the college's name was changed to Western State College of Colorado in recognition of its expanding programs in the liberal arts at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Continuing Western's impact, Johnson bought land at Gothic, a once thriving silver-mining camp 35 miles north of Gunnison, and founded the famed Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in 1928.
Western athletic director Paul Wright became known as “the father of intercollegiate skiing” when he convinced the NCAA to adopt it as an official sport in 1953.
Western achieved university status in 2012.
In 2012, the institution was renamed Western State Colorado University.
In September 2018, alumnus Paul M. Rady donated a historic $80 million to establish the Paul M. Rady School of Computer Science & Engineering.
In September 2018, the institution changed its name to Western Colorado University.
