In 1921, he started Western Exterminator Company with nothing but a desk, a phone, $25 in chemicals, and a vision based on quality customer service at a fair price.
1921: The first aerial insecticide applications begin in Ohio.
1930: Farmers start using synthetic organic compounds to control plant pathogens.
The Little Man first joined the Western family in 1931 when a Yellow Pages advertising representative came to Carl and Ray trying to sell a small ad, and promised the creation of a unique logo if a contract was signed.
1948: Scientists begin talking more about the importance of beneficial insects.
During the 1960's, as the second generation took the helm, Western continued to grow throughout all of California.
1969: The United States passes the National Environment Policy Act, and the National Academy of Sciences formalizes the term “integrated pest management.”
1972: The Federal Environmental Pesticides Control Act passes.
1996: The first transgenic (genetically modified) crops are commercialized.
2006: Worldwide concerns grow about engineered transgenic crops, which slow down the adoption of some IPM technologies.
