Western University of Health Sciences company history timeline

1977

Founded in 1977, it is one of the largest graduate schools for the health services professions in California.

1978

In October 1978, classes began for the 36 members of the Charter Class of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific.

1986

In 1986, the college began offering a second degree, the Master of Science in Health Professions Education.

1992

In 1992, the physical therapy program opened.

1996

During the annual convocation, in 1996, President Pumerantz officially declared the institution’s name as Western University of Health Sciences.

The campus kept growing over the next decade, with enrollment jumping dramatically in 1996, when the addition of a College of Pharmacy coincided with the campus’ name change to Western University of Health Sciences.

1998

In 1998, the university established the Harris Family Center for Disability and Health Policy.

2001

In August 2001, the new Harriet K. and Philip Pumerantz Library was dedicated to the students.

2008

In 2008, the university opened the Banfield Pet Hospital to the public.

2009

In 2009, three new colleges opened at WesternU: podiatric medicine, optometry, and dentistry.

2010

The following year, in 2010, the Patient Care Center opened, offering medical, dental, optometric, podiatric and pharmacy services to the community.

2011

In 2011, Western University of Health Sciences opened a new medical school campus in Lebanon, Oregon called the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest.

2014

In 2014, WesternU assumed sole operation and management of the pet hospital.

2015

In January 2015, WesternU began collaborating with colleagues in Scotland affiliated with the UK National Health Service, assisting in the development of a standardized platform for diabetes care called the Scottish Care Information Diabetes Collaboration.

It graduated its first class of 100 osteopathic physicians in June 2015.

In 2015, the Southern California Medical Museum opened on the WesternU campus.

The same year (2015), Doctor Pumerantz retired after 38 years as founding president.

2017

In November 2017, WesternU opened an Eye Care Institute in Los Angeles, which specializes in low-vision rehabilitation.

2019

In 2019, the university received the eighth most applications of any medical school in the United States.

2020

In a second communication on October 21, 2020 the board of trustees announced the formation of a Presidential Transition Communications Committee to plan for a successful transition in leadership while addressing shared governance, transparency, accountability, and communication.

In December 2020, WesternU purchased a building in Lebanon, Oregon to house a doctor of physical therapy program.

2021

The first class of physical therapy students began courses in July 2021.

2022

The search for a regularly appointed President of WesternU concluded with the selection of Robin Farias-Eisner, MD, PhD, MBA. Doctor Farias-Eisner is the third president of the University effective March 1, 2022.

WesternU plans to open a physical therapy program at the Oregon campus in 2022, and an occupational therapy program the following year.
