Westerra Credit Union company history timeline
Our credit union was formed by eight school teachers who pooled their funds in 1934 to be able to make loans to other teachers.
Jeffco Credit Union was formed in 1948 to serve the Jefferson County school employees’ community.
In 1951, the Safeway Rocky Mountain Credit Union was chartered to serve employees of Safeway.
Westerra continues to be awarded the top 5-star rating for safety and soundness by Bauer Financial, Inc., an industry expert reporting on the performance of United States banks and credit unions since 1983.
In 2006, Westerra Credit Union became the new name for the credit union formed by the merger of three of the state’s leading credit unions: Denver Public Schools Credit Union, Safeway Rocky Mountain Federal Credit Union, and Gateway Credit Union — serving the city of Aurora.
The credit union’s name was changed to Westerra Credit Union in 2006 to better reflect its growing and diverse membership.
Westerra has not engaged in the subprime lending that led to the financial crisis that began in 2008.
