In 1967, Westside Community Mental Health Center (WCMHC) was incorporated.
In 1968, the largest grant on mental health in the country was awarded to WCMHC, bypassing both the State and the City.
When Westside consolidated Middle Schools in 1987, The Westside Community Center was opened for many thousands of meetings and special events.
After Blue Cross Blue Shield purchases Cameron Hill in 2000, 7 years later the complex is completed hiring 4,900 employees.
The Community Center was repurposed in 2015 as a swing School for Westside students while new elementary schools were under construction.
The Westside Community Center was created in August 2019 to bring city stakeholders together and serve as a hub for community-based research, while additionally providing educational and cultural services and career development and training opportunities.
On the same week that the ribbon was cut to open the center in 2019, UTSA announced the Westside Community Partnerships Initiative to shape educational, economic and cultural programs and services for individuals living and working in West Side ZIP codes.
In September 2020, the Westside Evolves planning process launched in an effort to understand the neighborhood, create a shared vision, and design a plan for the future of the neighborhood.
The event will launch a call to action for video submissions from UTSA students, faculty, staff and alumni that will be compiled for a virtual march in March 2021.
