Classes began almost immediately in temporary quarters in Donnelly Hall (a building on Montana Avenue owned by James N. Gamble). The school moved into a brand new building in 1870.
The Village grew rapidly and by 1876, was served by the Cincinnati & Westwood Railroad which ran behind Westwood School.
In 1906, planning began for a new school to be located between the old school and the railroad tracks.
The formal dedication took place June 18, 1910.
In 1956, Bracken Woods Primary School opened.
It opened in 1959, when its mascot was the wolverine.
The original time capsule, a 12-inch by 8-inch by 3-inch brass box, contained a copy of a 1971 newspaper, letter from then-Gov.
Yearbook class photos from fall 1971 show it opened with 695 students and 33 staff members, including Westwood’s first principal, Merle Fowler.
Kellye Cash graduated from Poway High in 1983.
One was about Kellye Cash who was crowned the 1987 Miss America after being Miss Tennessee.
Westwood was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for the 1989-90 school term.
The campus celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 8, 1997, during which school officials opened a time capsule sealed behind an outdoor wall plaque before its opening.
In 2005, three Casa de las Campanas residents in the woodworking group (Ed Kronenberger, Jim Winston and Irving Kelley) made the needed repairs and another resident and artist, Kay Hunt, gave the bird its first coat of paint.
Westwood School reopened on August 22, 2012.
Our Student Enterprise was launched during the 2016-17 school year for grades 5 and 6, and it will be rolled out to the entire school in phases.
