1848

WGL was founded in 1848 with a goal of improving the quality of life in our nation’s capital.

1878

In 1878, Thomas Edison introduced the incandescent lamp, a threat to the company.

1891

In 1891, one of the gasometers exploded; the cause was attributed to a large storm.

1915

Gas furnaces began to appear in 1915.

1947

In 1947, the gas industry expanded to nearly 22 million customers nationwide.

1964

In 1964, the Washington Gas Light Company sold development rights for the location in a deal that stipulated that the new structure would be supplied exclusively by the company.

1988

In 1988, WGESystems (now WGL Energy) is organized as a division and subsidiary of Washington Gas, dedicated to energy conservation and providing renewable energy solutions such as solar power.

1997

In 1997, in response to newly deregulated gas and energy markets, Washington Gas formed Washington Gas Resources Corp to serve as a holding company for non-utility subsidiaries.

2004

In 2004, WGL added its one millionth energy customer.

2010

WGL Holdings Chairman Terry McCallister rings the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange in 2010 to celebrate the company’s 70th anniversary on the exchange.

2014

WGL is honored by the Salvation Army in 2014 for its 30-year commitment to providing energy benefits to the Washington D.C. community through the Washington Area Fuel Fund.

In 2014, the company rebranded itself as WGL, aiming to project the image of "a new kind of energy company: answer-oriented, technology and data driven, responsive and built for the complex energy markets of today and tomorrow".

2018

On July 6, 2018, the company was acquired by AltaGas.
