1980

The company was founded in 1980 by Kenneth R. Whiting and Bert Ladd.

1983

Whiting Oil and Gas's ability to expand its asset base was increased substantially once the company converted to public ownership, a step the company took in 1983.

1992

In 1992, Alliant Energy, a Midwest public utility, acquired the company for $27.5 million.

2000

Vice-president of corporate development during Whiting Oil and Gas's first decade of business and a contract consultant following the Alliant merger, Volker was given the titles of executive vice-president and chief operating officer in August 2000.

2002

Volker was promoted to president and chief executive officer in January 2002.

The year became the starting point of an expansion campaign that would be revealed after Alliant's management made an important decision in late 2002.

2003

In 2003, the company became a public company via an initial public offering which raised over $400 million.

2004

The acquisition of Equity, which was completed in July 2004, was part of Volker's broader strategy for growth.

2005

In 2005, the company acquired assets in the North Ward Estes field for $459 million.

2013

In August 2013, the company acquired assets in the Williston Basin for $260 million.

2014

In 2014, the company acquired Kodiak Oil & Gas.

2016

The property was sold in 2016 for $300 million.

2017

In January 2017, the company sold midstream assets in North Dakota for $375 million.

2020

On April 1, 2020, the company filed bankruptcy in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.
