Wickliffe Ohio history

In 1824, in order to administrate the United States government’s Native American policies, Congress formed a new bureau within the War Department called the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which worked closely with the United States Army to enforce their policies.

Although several people handled mail and postal services before 1843, the first United States post office branch was established on July 3 of that year.

To quiet these fears, in 1851 the United States government organised a conference with several local Indian tribes and established the Treaty of Fort Laramie.

In 1871 the federal government approved a critical law stating that the United States would not deal with Native American tribes as independent entities.

A second frame school was built and used until a two-room brick school was built in 1878 where the Middle School now stands.

In 1887, Congress enacted the General Allotment Act, the most important component of the United States government’s assimilation program, which was written to “civilize” American Indians by teaching them to become farmers.

A left wing was added to the brick school building in 1896, making it a four-room school.

Also, it was through the efforts of the Mothers Club, formed in 1913, that electric lights were obtained for the school building.

The village of Wickliffe was incorporated in 1916.

LeRoy Heavilin became the first Superintendent of Schools and history tells us that in 1919, Mrs.

In 1924, Wickliffe High School graduated its first class–three students.

In 1928, the trees on Euclid Avenue were uprooted so that a sewer line could be installed and several houses were moved back to make way for businesses.

In March 1929, the Wickliffe Chamber of Commerce was formed.

August 29, 1931: The Lubri-Graph Corporation moves to the Cleveland suburb of Wickliffe, Ohio.

The Wickliffe Public Library, established in 1936, was housed in what is now the Middle School.

In 1946 the Village police and fire departments were reorganized into separate departments.

Wickliffe officially became a city on October 6, 1951, when the population grew to 5,002.

In 1954, the residents attended the dedication of Wickliffe’s fabulous City Hall – the million-dollar mansion built by shipping magnate Harry Coulby.

July 15, 1957: With the acquisition of International Rustproof Corporation, a producer of metal coatings, Lubrizol gains significant technical expertise in coatings technology-expertise that will increase over the years through numerous research and development initiatives.

The present high school was built on Rockefeller Road in 1958, and the old building became the junior high school.

In 1960 it moved to temporary quarters in a Lloyd Road at Euclid Avenue storefront.

In 1982, due to declining enrollment, both Worden and Mapledale Elementary Schools were closed and the junior high became the Wickliffe Middle School.

In 1990, a free-standing police station was built on the Coulby property just west of the mansion at a cost of $1.8 million dollars.

The police had offices in the east wing until 1991, when the new state-of-the-art police station was opened adjacent to City Hall at a cost of $1,800,000.

The Fire Department built a new building along Euclid Avenue in 1996 at a cost of $2,000,000.

June 3, 2004: Lubrizol completes the acquisition of Noveon International, Inc., a specialty chemical company with a strong product portfolio in additives and ingredients for the personal care, performance coatings and engineered polymers markets.

July 31, 2008: The Lubrizol Corporation celebrates its 80th anniversary.

Sep 16, 2011: Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and The Lubrizol Corporation announce completion of the acquisition of Lubrizol.

August 20, 2013: Lubrizol opens a world-class additives manufacturing facility in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China.

In 2014, Lubrizol adds a third business segment.

Lubrizol decides to reduce the scope of the oilfield business and wind down the Oilfield Solutions segment in 2017.
