Wicomico County Public Schools company history timeline

1868

Beginning in 1868, WCPS’ mission was to provide basic education to children in all parts of the county.

Also in 1868, 10 school districts were established, and 24 one-room schools were authorized to be constructed — at an average price of $325 each.

1906

Wicomico High School was originally built in 1906 on Carroll Street in Salisbury.

1919

In 1919, the first graduation exercises were held at the Colored Industrial High School, later renamed Salisbury High School, under the direction of its African-American principal, Charles Chipman.

1962

Wicomico County’s fourth high school would open on College Avenue in 1962, and would be named in honor of James M. Bennett, for his 40 years of service as superintendent.

1966

Wicomico Public Schools integrated all students into one system in 1966 as part of desegregation, and Salisbury High School was converted to a vocational-technical school for the entire county, meaning all Salisbury-area high school students were assigned to Wicomico or James M. Bennett.

1975

Parkside High School opened its doors to students on Beaglin Park Drive in the fall of 1975 as the county’s fourth and final high school.

1989

Claire Spillane, a social worker with experience in Adventure Based Counseling, moved to the Eastern Shore in the fall of 1989.

1990

The program was expanded to include other teachers in January of 1990 when the first teacher training was held.

Spillane incorporated the students at the Alternative School into the program in the spring of 1990.

1991

In the spring of 1991, Oliver Johnson became the first of hundreds of volunteers to help out with the new program.

During the 1991-92 school year, Spillane was focusing her work with Bennett Middle Schools high-risk students.

1992

Harlan Eagle filled a full time position with the program for the 1992-93 school year, which was funded by the state grant.

1994

To further the program, in 1994 Beyond the Limits made an agreement with Salisbury University’s physical education department exchanging the use of the ropes course for the use of Salisbury U’s indoor facilities, including that of the climbing wall.

1997

In 1997, a number of new low and high elements were added to the ropes course, curriculum was completed and a new assistant facilitator position was funded by the Board of Education.

1998

Since 1998, Beyond the Limits has expanded and provided the opportunity for thousands of students in the Wicomico County School System and throughout Delmarva to experience a day with the Beyond the Limits program.

2009

He originally taught 5 years in Baltimore County before joining Wicomico County in 2009 as a history teacher at Salisbury Middle.

Bolek began her teaching career in Wicomico County as a substitute teacher in 2009.
