The Role:

Senior Mechanical Fire Protection Engineer (DOD Project)

Johnson Service Group (JSG) is recruiting for a Senior Fire Protection Engineer to support the Sentinel Program at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, UT. This program is modernizing the ground-based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems and launch infrastructure.
U.S. Citizenship is required.
Candidates must have active security clearance or the ability to obtain a government clearance.
This position is expected to be 100% onsite and per diem is available. The targeted base rate is $90.00/hour for this role. Must be able to travel to various project jobsites one week per month.
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership in the design and development of fire protection systems and equipment for the Sentinel project.
Prepare design and procurement documents relating to Fire Protection.
Develop calculations, construction drawings, tailored Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS), and requisition specifications.
Review and approve sub-contractors' submittals, and assist in determining needed changes and with final testing.
Has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating Fire Protection issues with internal and external stakeholders.
Support the development and maintenance of the Fire Protection Design Analysis Report (FPDAR) for the facilities utilizing recognized fire protection industry approaches, methodologies, calculations, and analyses.
Support project needs for design, design review, installation, commissioning, code interpretations, and walk downs at the facility as needed to support project deadlines.
Support Construction and Startup on an as needed basis.
Interface with internal and external customers, as required, for the design, installation, and testing of the passive and active fire protection systems and components.
Support Department of Defense (DOD) or other external regulatory agency reviews of the fire protection aspects of the design and installation on the project.
Interface with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) including authoring equivalencies and exemptions.
Perform Fire Protection reviews to determine compliance with applicable Unified Facilities Criteria (UFCs), DOD orders, NFPA standards, and FM standards.
Support fire protection subcontracts, including review of various types of documents and being the technical point of contact.
Education And Experience
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering is required.
5-8 years of experience as a fire protection engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in fire suppression and fire alarm system design.
Demonstrated knowledge of the fire, life safety, and building codes - including NFPA, UL and FM standards.
Registered Fire Protection Engineer (PE) who has passed the fire protection engineering written examination administered by NCEES
Experience working on DoD government projects and Unified Facilities Criteria.
Experience using SpecsIntact to tailor Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS).

The P.L is the “voice of the customer” in our OI facilities. The P.L. is responsible for the customer experience from the point of sale to on-site delivery. Job Responsibilities
Primary responsibility is being the “voice of the customer” in OI facilities.
Responsible for managing multiple sales orders concurrently.
Upon sales order assignment by the C.O.M, share responsibility with the O.S.R and Est. to hold a Turnover/Kick Off meeting at the point of sale to ensure all needed information and paperwork are complete; that the scope of work is clear; review the estimate and confirm values for all items; and begins the process of scheduling the project with production to align with “Customer Ship Date” in AX.
From point of sales order assignment, the P.L. becomes the point of contact for the customer. They must ensure the customer is kept up-to-date from production schedule to on-site delivery.
Provide direction and oversight to all aspects of the project team: engineering, production planning, transportation, procurement and accounting.
Prepare any applicable change order proposals in a timely manner, whether owner/ client/ engineer request or by generation from OI.
Monitors the progress and status from the point of sales as it moves through the process, and acts to problem solve proactively, offers technical advice, and assists other staff to expedite assigned projects, removes obstacles which may cause a project to fall behind schedule.
Ensures a mentality of continuous improvement of processes and systems.
If needed, coordinate site visits and work with the customer to ensure that all issues that arise from the point of sale to completion of the project are resolved promptly, including but not limited to change orders, adjustments to schedule and collect information as appropriate to each assigned project. Identify and requisition special purchase items as required.

Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required. *Civil Engineering preferred.
3+ years Project Management experience.
Demonstrated ability to manage several large to small, complex projects simultaneously.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Role Overview
The Structural Design Engineer will create structural steel joist designs, ensure manufacturability, and collaborate daily with shop and production teams. The role combines technical engineering, problem-solving, cross-functional coordination, and periodic interaction with consulting engineering firms.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Design & Engineering
Produce safe, accurate, and buildable steel joist designs for in-house fabrication.
Apply engineering judgment to ensure manufacturability, load requirements, and production standards are met.
Support real-time troubleshooting with production teams on the shop floor.
Internal Collaboration
Partner with detailing, shop order, and production groups to clarify design assumptions and resolve technical questions.
Ensure smooth handoffs from design → detailing → fabrication.
Provide technical expertise to internal teammates throughout the process.
External Engineering & Customer Support
Participate in occasional visits to regional sales offices and consulting engineering firms (Southern California, Northern California, Arizona, Salt Lake City, Portland, etc.).
Represent the engineering team and help bridge communication between external designers and internal production.
Support understanding of design assumptions, product capabilities, and structural requirements.
