William Jessup University company history timeline

1939

With the combined effort of Doctor Eugene Sanderson, William L. Jessup, and Roy B. Shaw, the college opened its doors in September 1939.

The University was founded as San Jose Bible College in 1939, in San Jose by William Jessup, the school's first President.

1951

The first three buildings were erected and put into use by February 1951.

By 1951, with the school expanding and the San José State University across the street encroaching, San Jose Bible College moved to a parcel bordered by Coyote Creek, 12th Street and nearly 30 years later by I-280.

1960

The first on-campus housing, Beach Memorial Hall, a dormitory for women, was dedicated in 1960.

1962

The College received accreditation with the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges (now the Association of Biblical Higher Education) in 1962.

1984

Doctor Bryce Jessup, the late son of the founder and the College’s fifth president, began his leadership in 1984.

1989

After 50 years of service as San Jose Bible College, the College became San Jose Christian College in July 1989.

1996

The School of Professional Studies (now Adult Degree Completion Program) for working adults was added in 1996 to meet the educational needs of adult learners.

1999

He published numerous articles on leadership and church issues, served on many non-profit boards, and was named “Man of Valor” by the Racial Reconciliation Committee of Santa Clara Valley African-Americans in 1999.

2002

Jessup received accreditation in 2002 as San Jose Christian College.

2003

As administration was unable to find a new location in the Santa Clara Valley, it was decided to move to the Sacramento metropolitan city of Rocklin in April 2003.

2004

The College officially moved from its San Jose campus in June 2004.

The college moved to its present campus in August 2004 and became William Jessup University, named after one of its founders, William L. Jessup.

2021

Today, Jessup has over 2,400 students enrolled in our Traditional Undergraduate, Adult Degree Completion, Online, Graduate, and Certificate programs for the 2021-22 academic year.
