Williamson Medical Center history

The addition opened to the public in 1967 and added 32 beds to the facility, bringing the total to 82 patient beds.

In 1968, the hospital’s first critical care unit opened under the direction of Doctor Robert Hollister.

1971 was the facility’s second expansion where a third and fourth floor were added to the West Wing adding 32 additional patient beds.

At the hospital’s 20-year anniversary in 1978, a number of employee service awards were handed out to honor employees who had been with the hospital since its inception.

In 1979, orthopaedic surgeon Craig Ferrell, M.D., founded Franklin Bone & Joint Clinic.

The doors of the new $26.5 million state-of-the-art medical center opened in August of 1986.

In 2009, the successful practice was acquired by a larger healthcare organization and continued to thrive under the leadership of long-time Bone and Joint surgeons, now recognized as the best in the nation.

In the fall of 2013, after years of negotiating and planning, WMC announced a partnership with Vanderbilt Medical Center to construct a Monroe Carell Jr.

July 1 of 2015, Williamson Medical Center celebrated its new children’s hospital with a massive grand opening.

In 2017, Williamson Medical Center announced plans for the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee, a partnership between the Franklin hospital and 13 orthopaedic specialists.

Following their April 2018 groundbreaking, the Institute physicians worked from temporary offices at Williamson Medical Center as well as a second Tollgate Village location in Thompson’s Station.

The $40 million, 121,252-square-foot freestanding medical office opened on Williamson Medical Center’s main campus April 2019 and was designed to accommodate orthopaedic surgery, arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine and spinal surgery.

In January of 2021, the practice opened an additional location in Nolensville, which also offers orthopaedic urgent care and physical therapy.
