Willy Street Co-op company history timeline

1974

A small, dedicated volunteer staff kept the Co-op operating while other members searched for a more permanent location and soldbonds to generate capital.In September of 1974, the Co-op relocated to 1014 Williamson Street.

Since 1974, the Willy Street Co-op has offered an expanding selection of natural and organic products.

1977

In 1977 the Co-op outgrew its space at 1014 Williamson and found a new home at 1202 Williamson Street (where the Social Justice Center is now). Finally having some space to stretch with 1,600 square feet of retail, the store immediately expanded the selection of products available.

1979

In order to streamline this cumbersome system, a board of directors was elected and began holding monthly meetings in March 1979.

1982

After its first two years of financial losses, the staff was restructured and the first General Manager was hired fall of 1982.

1985

The Co-op was able to expand into the other side of the building in 1985, which allowed them to have a deli and sell beer.

1998

In 1998, the current history of expansion and re-location was completed with the purchase and extensive remodeling of the Eagles Club at 1221 Williamson Street.

1999

The store that is now called "Willy East" opened in October of 1999 and features 9,500 square feet of retail space and a total square footage of 20,000 feet.

2005

In 2005 the Co-op opened its production kitchen to cook most of the Deli food and bakery products, as well as the food for its catering program.

2010

The second store opened in November of 2010.

2016

In 2016 the Co-op opened a third store, Willy North, at 2817 N. Sherman Avenue, in the former location of Pierce's NorthSide Market.

2022
