Wind tunnel engineer job description

The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.

Responsibilities Help build safe work plans that maintain project schedules.Ensure guidance systems are maintained and accurate using survey equipment and guidance software such as TACS.Helping to design and improve tunneling/construction processes for better efficiencies including logistics, sequences, etc. Coordinate job walks for pricing, work, schedules, material deliveries, or inspections with vendors, contractors, and building officials.Track and maintain inventories of consumables for tunnel construction.Design parts, pieces, and systems to solve issues found in the field using SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.Coordinate and collaborate with mechanical engineering team for improved design.Overall quality control of construction practices including grout and pre-cast concrete tunnel liner segments.Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports documenting progress or challenges on any given project.Troubleshoot tunnel boring machine issues as they arise.Collect soil samples. Other duties as required.

Basic QualificationsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or similar field.3+ years of experience in an active construction environment.

Preferred Skills and QualificationsStrong teamwork skills with a proven ability to effectively interact and collaborate with other engineering disciplines and field technicians.Acute attention to detail and sense of urgency.

Additional Requirements Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary.Ability to work outdoors and in confined spaces.

Your Impact:

Plans, executes, and closes out discrete wind tunnel test programs for various customers, serving as primary interface between facility and customers. Leads teams of engineers and technicians to accomplish these test programs. Establishes test timeline, manages all test-related, instrumentation, data and data systems, and test documentation. Evaluates final test data for quality and completeness. Duties also include identifying and implementing process improvements, determining required facility upgrades, and producing/delivering technical papers and presentations when warranted.

* Applies commonly used equations and techniques to solve assigned problems. Applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks
* May perform specific and limited engineering tasks of a broader assignment. Prepares computations, specifications, and reports
* Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria; makes minor adaptations and modifications as required
* Independently performs a project assignment that involves some complex features and can be guided by codes, standards, procedures, and other precedents of discipline
* Evaluates the results of an analysis using techniques prescribed by senior engineers or supervisors

Here's What You'll Need:

U.S. Citizenship Required. BS degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics from an ABET accredited engineering school and three (3) to five (5) years of related experience is required. Must have ability to lead team in preparing and conducting wind tunnel tests of scale models; to maintain good interpersonal relations with test team members (including test customer personnel) while meeting time, quality, and cost requirements; to recognize the importance of customer relations; to respond properly to changing customer needs; and to multi-process inputs with a coherent output during test periods. Prefer experience in fluid mechanics, instrumentation, data acquisition (Pacific Instruments, National Instruments, TE Connectivity/PSI pressure scanning), analysis, and documentation.

Prefer experience in hypersonic testing, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, instrumentation, data acquisition, analysis, and documentation. Experience with high-energy systems and specialty gases, fuels, and fluid systems associated with airbreathing engine testing a plus.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office Environment (45%) Test Environment- May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, chemicals, and industrial facility environments (45%) Travel between various facilities/test operations is required (10%)

Physical Requirements:

Must have sufficient mobility to enter all areas of test facilities; crawl, climb ladders, enter confined spaces, ability to work at elevated levels on platforms and scaffolding, etc. (20%). Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lbs.

Equipment and Machines:

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.) with knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, MATLAB, LabVIEW, etc. (50%), Safety and personal protective equipment (20%).

Attendance:

Regular attendance mandatory (100%), Overtime/work outside normal schedule required (<20%)

**Your Opportunity**

As a Tunnel Engineer based out of one of our trenchless and tunnel offices such as the Walnut Creek, CA office, you will work independently on smaller projects and as a team member of larger projects. You should be able to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer tunnel and trenchless projects. Work will include a variety of complex tasks such as calculations, construction support, development of contract documents, and coordination of tasks and personnel. The projects assigned may be complex, broad, varied and diverse in scope. You will design proposed projects to ensure reliability, efficiency, constructability, and cost-effectiveness and may also participate in the construction phase of projects.

**Your Key Responsibilities**

+ Work on multiple projects and be responsible for individual tasks on complex projects.

+ Perform more complex engineering design tasks on assigned projects under supervision of the Project Technical Lead or Project Manager, including engineering drawings, calculations, engineering reports, specifications, presentations, and various contract documents.

+ Engage in design development through sketches and diagrams developed through coordination and communication with our CAD and graphics teams.

+ Prepare and revise documentation and drawings in various project phases including design reports, schedules, drawings, details, calculations, and construction cost estimates.

+ Participate in project coordination meetings with internal and external team members, potentially including Owners, Clients, and Contractors.

+ Coordinate regularly and effectively with other team members while working on projects; complete tasks and delegate specific project tasks to other team members as appropriate.

+ Assist senior engineers/designers in terms of production of deliverables and through developing and managing portions of the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule as needed.

+ Participate in constructability reviews.

+ Conduct and/or coordinate quality assurance and quality control activities.

+ Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the discipline.

+ Prepare portions of engineering project proposals, change orders, project descriptions, and other documents.

+ Help develop more junior staff through a willingness to communicate and mentor.

+ Support the project team in providing services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information and contract document clarifications.

+ Familiar with the primary phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.

+ Knowledgeable of tunnel and trenchless means and methods, materials, and industry standards.

+ Is proficient in Microsoft Office, as well as relevant specialized design software packages. Familiarity with relevant computational modeling software is a plus.

+ Able to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.

+ Able to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.

+ Interested in developing marketing and proposal skills and presentation skills.

+ Able to travel for design or construction tunnel or trenchless roles.

**Education and Experience**

Bachelor's degree in Civil/Geological Engineering & Licensed Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) or ability to obtain a license within 6 months of hire. A post graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or Structural Engineering is preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in tunnel or trenchless design or construction activities and related geotechnical or structural engineering input. Additional experience is preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
