In 1955, the Recreation Association approached Avon Old Farms School with a bid to purchase the 20 acres of property surrounding Walton Pond for a permanent site for the camp.
During the 1960’s Winding Trails, owning its own property, started to physically take shape.

In 1968, Mort Dunning from Dunning Sand and Gravel started to mine gravel out of Poplar Swamp which sat at the southern boundary of Winding Trails and would eventually become Dunning Lake.

In 1973, Winding Trails began its cross country ski program with just 25 sets of skis.
Enterprising scholars presented the association's first session on women's history at that meeting – a stimulating and inspiring event. It was also exciting to be in attendance at the 1975 meeting in Halifax, which witnessed the founding meeting of the Canadian Committee on Women's History.
At the annual general meeting in London in 1978, the officers, including the vice-president, who would become president of the association, were still elected by those who attended, although voting by proxy was permitted.
The 1980’s was a decade of planning and slow growth.
As Donald Wright has noted, competition for the presidency had been seen as problematic for at least a decade when, in 1981, the cha Council decided that only one candidate would be nominated, then and in the future.

At some point, a mail ballot was also introduced and, in 1987, procedures were amended again to permit additional nominations from the floor of the annual general meeting, should the need arise.24
