Position Overview:
The LicensedPracticalNurse (LPN) is a health care professional who provides specific services in the Surgery Department under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and Surgeon. The LPN is active in the surgery process and collaborates with the surgical team to deliver quality and safe health care. The LPN has an understanding of the surgical processes in the operating room. Provides care while meeting physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient and family. The LPN collaborates with the surgical team to modify the plan of care based on the needs of the patient and reports changes in the patient's condition to the RN.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Keeps updated on current surgical practice, medications, and legal/ethical issues.
Follows best practice recommendations including but not limited to AORN, AST, Perioperative Guidelines, and organization wide policies and procedures. Works closely with the surgeon while recognizing surgeon preferences and preference card details.
In coordination with the surgical team, assembles the necessary instruments, supplies and equipment for the surgical procedure. Checks that all equipment is functioning properly before use. Notifies RN of defects, removes defective equipment from the patient care area, labels and documents defect(s) and need for repair in order to maintain a safe environment.
Practices safe site surgery techniques including but not limited to aseptic technique, time out standard work and stops the line when safety issues or concerns with patient care occur.
Acts as a scrub personnel during the intra-operative procedure.
Performs sponge, needle and instrument counts with the RN in accordance to policy/procedure.
Consults with the RN to make revisions to surgeon preference cards.
Demonstrates an understanding of surgical procedures. Applies knowledge to set up cases by pre-operative scrubbing, gowning, gloving, instrumentation, sutures, assisting surgeons with gowning and gloving, draping patients, and/or assisting surgeon with draping; intra-operative coordinating, passing of instrumentation, and being alert to the needs of the surgeon, post-operative drape removal from patient, removal of contaminated instruments, and transport to the decontamination room for processing, safe disposal of all sharps, and proper disposal of trash and linen.
Is constantly vigilant to the safety needs of the patient and takes necessary precautions as warranted.
Follows recommended infection control/prevention procedures.
Follows department specific policies, procedures, standard work, and assists in updating the standard work content as needed.
Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
Department Specific Requirements:
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room.
Assists in prepping room for the next patient.
Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
Sponges or suctions the operative site.
Applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders.
Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.
Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
Review the patient's chart, identifies patient, verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms, and brings the patient to the assigned operating room.
Assists with transferring patient to the operating room table.
Monitors the comfort of the patient and provides verbal and tactile reassurance to the patient.
Assists with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.
Assists with applying tourniquets and monitors before the procedure.
Anticipates additional supplies needed during the procedure.
Attends focus board and mandatory staff meetings and completes educational requirements of Winona Health.

Position Highlights
Job Duties:
The LicensedPracticalNurse will provide direct patient care in the residential hospice. The LPN is responsible for all duties related to the daily care including medication administration, meal preparation, daily personal cares and procedures as designated by the Case Management RN's. LPN is responsible for interacting with patient's family and visitors in a compassionate and respectful manner understanding that Hospice engulfs the whole of the patient and family; physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The nurse assumes responsibility for the outcome of nursing care provided to patients in their homes or in facilities. The nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the population served.
Education and/or Experience:
Graduate of accredited PracticalNursing program required; Minimum six months experience preferred. Must have current practicalnurselicensure from the state of Minnesota. CPR certified or must be obtained within 1 week of hire. Must have a valid driver's license and auto insurance.
This is a PRN/Casual Status Position.
The pay range for this position is $26.44 - $34.87 per hour. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

ICCU 0.75 - 0.90 FTE, 60 - 72 Hours a Pay Period (10 Week Internship) Days/Nights, Hours between 6:45 am - 7:15 pm or 6:45 pm - 7:15 am Weekends: Every Third Weekend Holidays: No Holidays Ten week, paid summer nursing internship. The Summer 2025 Nurse Intern is an integral part of the health care team who, under the direction of a professional nurse preceptor, assists in the delivery of patient care in the inpatient departments (Med-Surg-Peds and the ICCU). The Nurse Intern will participate in activities that will strengthen clinical skills, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary communication. The Nurse Intern primarily supports nursing functions as planned and delegated by the professional nurse preceptor who agrees to act as a supervisor and is immediately available to them.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Completes Winona Health orientation and educational requirements, maintains competency and practices and contributes to Winona Health's Mission, Vision, and Values.
* Under the direction of a professional nurse preceptor, they will perform duties related to the care and comfort of patients. The designated tasks are those which have been taught in the academic programs, orientation, and where the individual has demonstrated competence to a designated RN preceptor.
* Assists with: rooming of patients, bathing, feeding, ambulation, bed repositioning, toileting, personal cares, and vital signs.
* Obtains and puts away supplies to ensure quality and timely delivery of patient care.
* Is constantly vigilant to the safety needs of patients, taking necessary precautions as warranted and communicates concerns to the professional nurse in a timely manner.
* Responsible for inputting all applicable data collection and task completion into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). All of the Nurse Intern's documentation must be verified for accuracy and co-signed each shift by the professional RN preceptor, and the RN preceptor must complete and document independent patient assessments as required.
* Reports any malfunctioning equipment promptly and removes from the patient care area to maintain a safe environment.
* The Nurse Intern will administer and document administration of medication at the point of care and under the direct supervision of the RN preceptor.
* Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:
Required:
* Must be currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program or associate nursing program and qualified to graduate by December 2026 or May 2027 (Transcript will need to be provided)
* Must be actively enrolled in a nursing internship course through a Minnesota school of higher education
* CNA Certification - MN
* BLS Certification
* Good decision-making, communication, and organizational skills
* Commitment to full-time employment (36 hours per week) for 10 weeks. Days, evenings, nights, weekend, and holidays may be included
* Ability to perform multiple tasks independently, in a busy, ever-changing environment
* Intermediate Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook. Familiar with Patient Information Database (Cerner)
Preferred:
* Previous nursing assistant experience is preferred, but not required
