Winston-Salem Journal company history timeline

1897

The Winston-Salem Journal, started by Charles Landon Knight, began publishing in the afternoons on April 3, 1897.

1902

Knight moved out of the area and the Journal had several owners before publisher D.A. Fawcett made it a morning paper starting January 2, 1902.

1903

In 1903, The Journal was purchased by A.F.W. Leslie and his son, A.V. Leslie.

In 1903, A.F.W. Leslie and his son, A.V. Leslie, bought the paper.

1918

A YMCA that opened in 1918 and held the first library open to the Black community.

1920

Mass transit arrived in Winston-Salem in the 1920s.

1925

In 1925, when Owen Moon bought The Journal, Winston-Salem was the state's largest city with a population of 48,395.

1927

The Journal and Sentinel moved into a new building on North Marshall Street in 1927, and the Sunday edition was called The Journal and Sentinel.

1934

The company opened for business in 1934 on North Patterson Avenue and was running full-page advertisements in the city directory.

1937

Attorney Gordon Gray bought the newspapers on April 30, 1937.

A Black-owned beauty school that relocated from Oklahoma to Winston-Salem in 1937 called La Mae Beauty College.

1966

The "Call SAM (Sentinel Answer Man)" column appeared in the Sentinel starting October 10, 1966.

1969

His commitment to serving communities throughout the newspapers' coverage area continued even after Media General Inc. purchased the newspapers in 1969.

1971

Both the Journal and The Sentinel have won numerous national, state and regional professional honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1971.

1972

The company would later get purchased by the Winston-Salem Transit Authority, with its assets and routes integrated into the WSTA system in 1972.2

1985

On March 29, 1985, the Sentinel published its last edition.

2003

Since opening its doors in 2003, Krankies Coffee has become a pillar of Winston-Salem’s burgeoning downtown and Innovation Quarter scene.

2012

On April 9, 2012 the newspaper's parent company, Media General, listed revenue that included revenue projections "if newspaper division is sold". On May 17, 2012, Media General announced the sale of most of its newspapers to BH Media, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.
