Winter Park Resort company history timeline

1865

Back in 1865, J.A. Rollins built a toll road for wagons to cross the Continental Divide.

1876

Then, in 1876, a post office was finally built in Fraser, and it gave more permanence to the area.

The original 1876 house has been beautifully restored and is open to the public.

1904

Rails were laid down in 1904 and Arrow, or Arrowhead as it was initially called, was incorporated on December 29, 1904.

1905

Business was booming in Tabernash at the time, thanks to the railroad industry; tracks were built over the top of Rollins Pass in 1905 with a series of switch back loops with steep grades and severe snow conditions.

1924

Doc’s son, Chuck, who was born in Tabernash in 1924, was 6 years old when his family moved to Hideaway Park, and he still thinks of the area as one of the most beautiful places on earth.

1928

Once the Moffat Tunnel was opened in 1928 (see below), rails were taken off the pass.

1932

Not giving up on their dream to live in a mountain community, Doc and his wife Helen decided to purchase 10 acres of land on April 20, 1932 in what is today known as Winter Park.

1939

The United States Forest Service started by clearing some trails close to the railroad tracks, and the influx of eager skiers led to the building of a tow rope in 1939.

1975

Mary Jane, opened in 1975, has a separate base area and is known for its moguls, tree skiing, hidden huts, and generally more difficult terrain.

1977

Cancer ended Retta's life in 1977 but not before she left an indelible mark on skiing, Winter Park Resort and the disabled athlete community.

1978

In 1978, the village of Hideaway Park was incorporated and renamed Winter Park.

1986

The first major upgrade happened in 1986.

Vasquez Ridge, opened in 1986, offers intermediate terrain and mogul runs.

2002

The resort remained under control of the city of Denver until it was sold in 2002, at which time its name changed to Winter Park.

2004

The team also frequents Mary Jane during pre-season every year since 2004.

2006

The former town site and surrounding area, made up of 688 acres, was annexed into Winter Park in 2006.

2009

For many years there was a ski train directly from Union Station in Denver, but sadly a series of events caused the last trip to be made in 2009.

2013

Beginning with the 2013-14 season, the resort was divided into seven "territories". The three peaks — Winter Park, Mary Jane, and Vasquez Ridge — are each considered their own territories.
