WEAC company history timeline

1853

WEAC began as a statewide educational organization of teachers and administrators in 1853.

1949

In 1949, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies invited Doctor Jeffery, who was then serving as director of the Institute of Education at the University of London, to visit the West African nations of The Gold Coast (now, Ghana), Nigeria, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone.

1950

Doctor Jeffery finished visiting the West African nations in 1950, and not long after that was when he constructed his proposal for this new standardized system.

1951

By 1951, the Gold Coast became the first nation to pass the WAEC ordinance.

1953

The first ever Council meeting took place in Accra from 24th to 27th of March 1953.

1958

Eventually, an office was opened in Freetown in 1958.

1972

After passage of a collective bargaining law for public employees, it evolved into a pro-active teachers union and in 1972 changed its name to the Wisconsin Education Association Council.

1973

While in 1973, the national office of the Council in The Gambia was opened in Banjul (then Bathurst).

2002

WAEC celebrated its 50th anniversary in Abuja, Nigeria in March 2002.
