It engages in the generation, distribution, and sale of electricity to residential, commercial, industrial, and other customers in southeastern, east central, and northern Wisconsin, as well as in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The company generates electricity from coal, natural gas and oil, wind, hydro, and biomass. It also produces, distributes, and sells steam for processing, space heating, domestic hot water, and humidification customers in metropolitan Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition, the company engages in the purchase, distribution, and sale of natural gas to retail customers, as well as transportation of customer-owned natural gas in southeastern, east central, and northern Wisconsin. As of December 31, 2016, the company operated approximately 21,500 pole-miles of overhead distribution lines and 24,800 miles of underground distribution cable, as well as approximately 355 distribution substations and 301,700 line transformers; a gas distribution system consisting of approximately 10,200 miles of distribution mains connected at 28 gate stations; and steam systems comprising 40 miles of high pressure and low pressure steam piping, 4 miles of walkable tunnels, and other pressure regulating equipment.
